While the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum trots its cars out for a little exercise once a month or so, it takes something extra special for any of the cars on exhibit at the museum to leave the property for a showing. That something extra special is this year?s National Collector Car Appreciation Day, and that car is the 1967 Bizzarrini P538 on display there.
One of only seven such cars ever built, the Bizzarrini was designed in 1966 with the hope of running at Le Mans in 1967 before FIA homologation rules stymied the project. The design work was led by Giotto Bizzarrini, whose portfolio also included shepherding the 250 GTO for Ferrari, plus the Iso Grifo A3C. This P538, owned by New Jersey resident Van Horneff, is one of two powered by a Lamborghini V-12 fed by six Weber carburetors, producing 420hp.
On Friday, the Bizzarrini will head east from the museum in Philadelphia to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where American Collectors Insurance will host a car show celebrating Collector Car Appreciation Day, an annual event that recognizes the impact the collector car hobby has had on American culture. Made possible by U.S. Senate resolution 176, Collector Car Appreciation Day officially recognizes the fact ?that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States.?
ACI?s show will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at its offices at 496 Kings Highway North in Cherry Hill, a few miles east of Philadelphia between state highways 38 and 70. The rain date is Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. For more information, visit AmericanCollectors.com/NCCAD/.
