LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- South Florida volunteers are assembling care packages to send to troops overseas as part of a Christmas in July outreach.
Roughly 40 Florida Power & Light employees, their spouses and children volunteered Saturday with Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, a nonprofit organization that sends letters of encouragement. They helped fill 15-pound boxes to deployed troops. The 203 boxes were filled with children's hand-colored Christmas cards and candy canes, cookies, baby powder, pain reliever, playing cards and puzzle books, and coffee and cotton swabs.
Recipients include 100 members of Melbourne's 715th Military Police Company, who arrived in Afghanistan about a month ago.
The Palm Beach Post (http://www.ittybittyurl.com/Uqt ) reports each box also contained toiletries to be given to soldiers who didn't receive a care packaged along with stuffed toys to give to children.
