Show that kinetic energy of the earth after a collision can be ignored

I can't quite follow what you're doing there, and it's really late where I am, so I'll just start you off the right way.

This problem basically hinges on the Earth being much more massive than the ball, so the ratio of the mass of the ball to that of the earth is very close to zero.

Let's use some simpler symbols. Up is positive, down is negative. m is the mass of the ball, M is the mass of the earth. u is the initial speed of the ball, v is the final speed of the ball. The initial (vertical) speed of the earth is zero, the final speed is w.

So ##-mu = mv - Mw## ---eqn 1

##\frac{1}{2}mu^2 = \frac{1}{2}mv^2 + \frac{1}{2}Mw^2## --eqn 2

The first eqn is conservation of linear momentum, second is conservation of K.E.

Rearrange eqn 1 to isolate w in terms of the other two variables, then put that in eqn 2. You should obtain an equation relating the ratio ##\displaystyle \frac{u}{v}## to an expression in terms of the ratio ##\displaystyle \frac{m}{M}##. When you let ##\displaystyle \frac{m}{M} \rightarrow 0##, what can you say about u and v?

Now consider what that means in terms of equation 2. Observe that the second term on the RHS represents the K.E. of the earth. Remember that the only kinetic energy here comes from the ball. If it bounces up with (almost) the same kinetic energy as it came down with, what can you say about the kinetic energy imparted to the earth in the collision?

The GOP's solution to Obamacare? Nothing

This letter is in response to ?GOP needs to face reality, or else? (Column, July 30).

I could not agree more.?Republicans cannot successfully oppose Obamacare without proposing their own ideas for healthcare reform. But they won't, because they don't care about people who don't have insurance, they don't care about people with preexisting conditions. ?

Let the uninsured lose their savings to pay medical bills. Let them die prematurely. The Republicans don't think that's important. Most Republicans and their supporters have good health insurance themselves, so they have the "I've got mine, so I don't care about the rest of you" mentality.

Obamacare may have its problems, but at least it's an attempt to fix our broken healthcare system, and I'd rather give that a chance and tweak it where needed rather than go with what the Republicans are offering, which is nothing.?

Iranian TV clarifies Rouhani's Israel 'wound' comment

DUBAI | Fri Aug 2, 2013 9:30am EDT

DUBAI (Reuters) - Two days before his inauguration as Iran's new president, Hassan Rouhani said on Friday that Israeli occupation of Palestinian land had inflicted a "wound" on the Muslim world, according to a segment of his remarks broadcast on Iran's state-run Press TV.

An earlier report by Iran's student news agency ISNA had quoted Rouhani as saying: "The Zionist regime is a wound that has sat on the body of the Muslim world for years and needs to be removed."

That version echoed the fiercely anti-Israeli language of outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but was swiftly repudiated by Iranian state media, which said unidentified news agencies had distorted Rouhani's remarks.

Press TV then broadcast an excerpt from an exchange between Rouhani and journalists at a rally to mark Iran's annual Al Qods Day in support of the Palestinians.

"After all, in our region there's been a wound for years on the body of the Muslim world under the shadow of the occupation of the holy land of Palestine and the beloved al-Qods (Jerusalem)," Rouhani said in the segment.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seized on ISNA's version of Rouhani's comments, saying they showed the reputedly moderate Iranian cleric was as hostile to Israel as Ahmadinejad, whose denial of the Holocaust and description of Israel as a "cancerous tumor" prompted international condemnation.

The United States and its allies suspect Iran of seeking a nuclear weapons capability. Tehran says its nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes, but Israel regards it as a threat to its existence and refuses to rule out military action.

With a more pragmatic president in Iran, Western countries may see a better chance for diplomacy to lead to a deal to curb Tehran's uranium enrichment program and avoid any conflict.

"The true face of Rouhani has been revealed sooner than expected. Even if they hurry to deny his words - this is what the man thinks and this is the Iranian regime's plan of action," Netanyahu said in a statement.

Rouhani's words "must awaken the world from the illusion in which part of it is placed since the Iranian elections", he declared, saying Iran still aimed "to acquire nuclear weapons in order to threaten Israel, the Middle East and world peace".

"A nation that threatens to destroy the state of Israel must not be allowed to have weapons of mass destruction," he said.

Ahmadinejad addressed Israel on Qods Day in his last speech as president. "You planted wind in our region and you will reap the storm. I swear to God that a ferocious storm is coming and it will uproot the Zionist entity," Iran's state news agency IRNA quoted him as saying.

Google brings 'Find my iPhone'-like service to Android?

Google

Google

Google

The Android Device Manager will show a location, and give options to ring or wipe the phone.

Forgetful and unlucky Android phone and tablet owners will be happy to hear that their lost or stolen devices will now be trackable with a free service much like Apple's "Find my iPhone."

The Android Device Manager, announced by Google in a blog post Friday, will let you quickly locate your phone or tablet, whether it's in the kitchen or at the bar you were hanging out at last night.

Once your device is registered, you can log in to the service and it will immediately show your phone or tablet's current or last known position on a map. If it's nearby, you can make it ring or sound at max volume, even if it's in silent mode. If it's somewhere distant, at least you know where it is.

If, on the other hand, it has been stolen or can't be found, you can quickly wipe all the data from the device so whoever has it can't abuse your accounts or run up charges.

The service will go live later this month, and will work with any Android device that runs version 2.2 or above ? which is nearly all of them these days. Watch Google's official Android blog for further announcements.

College Hosts ?White Student Union?

By Alan with comments August 1, 2013 15:56

Complaints are pouring in to Georgia State because of the ?White Student Union? started by a student.

Freshman Patrick Sharp said he started the club so that students of European and Euro-American descent can celebrate their shared history and culture and discuss issues that affect white people, such as immigration and affirmative action.

The club is not an official student group recognized by the university. Sharp said any student can join and that he would work with other clubs, such as the Black Student Alliance, on common issues.

Georgia State is highly diverse, with whites comprising 38 percent of the student body, followed by blacks at 35 percent, Asians at 12 percent and Latinos at 7 percent.

?If we are already minorities on campus and are soon to be minorities in this country why wouldn?t we have the right to advocate for ourselves and have a club just like every other minority?? said Sharp, 18. ?Why is it when a white person says he is proud to be white he?s shunned as a racist??

TransCanada to build pipeline to Eastern Canada

TORONTO (AP) -- Pipeline company TransCanada says it will go ahead with a $12 billion plan to ship 1.1 million barrels of oil per day from Alberta to the country's Atlantic coast that would allow Canadian crude to be exported to Asia.

TransCanada said Thursday the pipeline will terminate in Saint John, New Brunswick, where a new deep-water marine terminal for tankers will be built.

Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver says he welcomes the prospect of transporting crude from Western Canada to consumers and refineries in Eastern Canada and ultimately to new markets abroad.

The announcement comes as TransCanada faces stiff opposition to its proposed Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to Texas. President Obama's initial rejection of Keystone went over badly in Canada, which relies on the U.S. for 97 percent of its energy exports.

92% Frances Ha

All Critics (128) | Top Critics (36) | Fresh (118) | Rotten (10)

In your twenties you decide on the final version of you. Sophie is working on it; Frances is stuck in her crazy, clueless, can't-pay-the-rent stage.

It's a tribute to Gerwig's performance, somehow both clumsy and elegant, that she wins us over despite ourselves, that we come to appreciate her aimlessness in a goal-oriented society ...

This is an odd film (creepier than it knows), and even if you feel the atmospheric company of Dunham-ism, with a little of Whit Stillman, Henry Jaglom, and Woody Allen, the core influence on Noah Baumbach's film is fifty years older or more.

Baumbach usually builds his films around difficult protagonists, but Frances is entirely endearing, at once silly and deep, hopeless and promising.

The dialogue and editing are zippy and generally charming, combining with the tart observations of 20-something culture to create a nice frisson.

A black-and-white salute to the French New Wave (the score is borrowed from Georges Delerue, composer of many a Truffaut and Godard film) that manages to be very much of this moment ...

Frances Ha has a warmth and lightness absent from Baumbach's earlier films, The Squid And The Whale (2005) and Margot At The Wedding (2007).

The sheer joy on Gerwig's face as she leaps and pirouettes across roads and between pedestrians is infectious.

There's little doubt that many people will find her insufferable, and almost everyone will experience moments of acute discomfort. But this is a wonderful performance that never becomes ingratiating.

Like Ethan Hawke's recent Before Midnight (aimed at people in their 40s), Frances Ha will engage its literate-minded target audience fed up with disaster blockbusters.

The hilarious, touching Frances Ha is lubricated by the same juice that allowed Jean-Luc Godard's Bande ? Part to slip so smoothly through the streets of Paris.

A film that's well aware of its own hipness, but never too cool to laugh and cry.

Frances Ha might well strike some viewers as ridiculously twee and tiresomely indulgent to its immature heroine. Not me, though. I'm happy to be enchanted.

Gerwig's last jaunt to Europe was in Woody Allen's feeble and disjointed To Rome With Love, and even Allen himself might acknowledge that here she is despatched across the Atlantic in a far more successful cause.

A perky cinematic pick-me-up starring the endearing Greta Gerwig who co-wrote the screenplay with director Noah Baumbach, her boyfriend.

I'm not sure what Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha is about, which is one reason I like it so much.

Frances is only adequate as a dancer but her enthusiasm bridges the gap between aspiration and ability. She deserves an A for effort. The film gets one for attainment.

It's a likable movie, with some nice moments of both comedy and pathos, and beautifully shot, but for me the reverence for its heroine was not completely earned, and the arrowhead was missing: the decisive jab of satire, of insight, of love.

This film may look like one of those annoyingly mannered independent films, with its wacky young cast and arty-farty black and white photography, but it's actually a fresh, smart and very funny comedy.

Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig have carved out, with effortless elegance and ease, a cinematic space for a woman to be, unapologetically, herself.

Frances Ha both acknowledges and earns its place in the tradition of the New York bourgeois comedy, encoding the angst of social mores in witty dialogue. Make no mistake: the cinematic slacker has come of age.

An unlikely feelgood crowd-pleaser - Frances Ha is sweet, funny, darling and almost unbearably lovely. And thankfully, everyone enunciates.

Brilliantly directed and beautifully shot, this is an utterly delightful, warm-hearted and very funny comedy with a wonderful script and a terrific central performance from Greta Gerwig.

Despite Gerwig's natural appeal and talent as a performer, Frances' self-absorption and flakiness begin to grate.

When is a film a throwaway sketch that's so good it's frameable? When it's Frances Ha.

Much of the reason why Frances Ha is a far more well-crafted and enjoyable piece of cinema than either Lola Versus or Damels in Distress.

Liberal Arts College President Creates Furor After Calling Minority Students 'Dark Ones'

Hillsdale College President?Larry Arnn made headlines yesterday after he referred to minorities as "dark ones" during a hearing in front of the Michigan state legislature.

While discussing a letter the college recieved in 2000 from the Michigan Department of Education about its seeming lack of racial diversity, Arnn said, "They said we violated the standards for diversity because we didn't have enough dark ones, I guess is what they meant." When asked to clarify his statement, Arnn said that the state of Michigan had sent representatives to Hillsdale to mark down the color of people's faces on clipboards, the Detroit Free Press reports.

A Michigan Department of Education spokesperson confirmed to the Free Press that no representatives had ever been sent to Hillsdale to identify students by race.

Several legislators chastised Arnn after his remarks, according to the Free Press.?One Democratic lawmaker told Arnn "You?re the president of a college. I would expect better out of you."?

Since the incident, Arnn has found support in both the Hillsdale administration and alumni of the college.

"I think this was Dr. Arnn's way to indicate that he was offended with what they were doing in taking clipboards and walking around campus to record the color of students' skin," one Hillsdale alum told MLive.

A statement from the college reaffirmed the school's commitment against discrimination based on "nationality, color or sex." Founded in 1844, Hillsdale was the first college in America whose charter prohibited discrimination.?

The statement reads,?"A controversy has arisen over Dr. Arnn's use of the term 'dark ones' to describe the students the state bureaucrats were there to identify. No offense was intended by the use of that term except to the offending bureaucrats, and Dr. Arnn is sorry if such offense was honestly taken. But the greater concern, he believes, is the state-endorsed racism the story illustrates."

Diageo Reports Fiscal 2013 Earnings

Diageo Plc.?s (DEO) earnings in fiscal 2013 ended Jun 30, 2013, went up 11% year over year in local currency to 104.4 pence ($1.6* per share) from 94.2 pence ($1.5** per share) in the same period previous year.

Positive pricing, favorable mix in the emerging markets, volume growth in North America and Latin America, and tight cost control by management contributed to profit growth during the fiscal 2013.

On a reported basis, net revenue (i.e. total revenue excluding excise duties) increased 6% in local currency to ?11.4 billion ($17.9 billion) in fiscal year 2013. On an organic basis, revenues increased 5%, while volume grew 1% from the prior-year level.

Diageo increased its marketing spending by 5% organically in fiscal 2013. Operating profit before exceptional items (excluding acquisitions and disposals) went up 8% year over year, on an organic basis.

During fiscal 2013, scotch was the most profitable category backed by the strong sales of Johnnie Walker. Diageo continued to enhance its wide portfolio of brands with innovations and massive product launches, particularly in the U.S. spirit market.

Segment Details

All the regions, except Europe, have delivered positive organic sales growth.

In North America, Diageo?s organic sales increased 5% in fiscal 2013, with a volume growth of 1% backed by positive price/mix and strong results in the U.S. spirits market. The shift in demand toward premium spirits led to strong sales of the premium brands of Diageo during the period. Marketing spending increased 7% in the region, primarily because of increased investment in strategic brands. Operating profit grew 10% organically in the year.

Beer and Ready to Drink suffered sales decline mainly due to increased competition and supply disruptions?

In Western Europe, organic sales fell 4% along with volume declines of 3% due to ongoing macroeconomic challenges. The company saw 9% decline in operating profit with an 8% decline in marketing spending. Marketing investment during the period was focused on the strategic brands like Captain Morgan, Tanqueray and Guinness.

Diageo has started reporting Africa, Eastern Europe and Turkey as a new geographical segment. This segment's organic sales increased 10% in the fiscal year, with 4% growth in volume backed by strong spirits sales gain in the region. Marketing spending increased 14% in the region, particularly on well established brands. Operating profit increased 14%.

The Latin America and Caribbean region delivered a strong performance in the year, with organic sales growth of 15% and volume growth of 4% backed by strong growth in Venezuela and Mexico, partially offset by a slowdown in Brazil. The company also increased its marketing spending by 12% to enhance the brand equities in its reserve brands. It will also invest part of it in enhancing strategic brands like Johnnie Walker Red Label, Black&White and White Horse. Despite the increasing costs, operating profit grew 28% in the year.

In the Asia Pacific region, sales climbed 3% organically with a volume growth of 1% mostly due to difficult conditions in Korea. Marketing spending jumped 8% mainly on reserve brands and operating profit grew 24% on an organic basis backed by positive pricing. Strong results in Taiwan, Japan, Australia and the Middle East were partially offset by reduced spending in China.

The company is increasing marketing investment in all the geographical segments and is focusing more on its premium brands. The strategy of converting to high-margin high-priced products is helping the company improve its margins.

Diageo is expanding fast into the emerging markets. Diageo holds 27.4% ownership in United Spirits Limited, a leading spirit company of India.

Currently, Diageo Plc carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Other consumer staples companies which are better placed and are worth considering are Tyson Foods Inc. (TSN), Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (GMCR) and Nash Finch Company (NAFC). While Green Mountain and Nash Finch hold a Zacks #1 (Strong Buy), Tsingtao Brewery carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

*?1=$1.56908 (average price of the year ended Jun 30, 2013).

GOP leaders halt debate on austere spending bill

By ANDREW TAYLOR
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - House GOP leaders Wednesday halted debate on an austere measure that was full of cuts to transportation and housing programs and community development grants, a setback for their budget strategy of embracing the stark spending levels dictated by automatic spending cuts known as sequestration.

GOP aides said there wasn't enough time in a busy House floor schedule to continue debate, but House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, R-Ky., said it was apparent there weren't the votes to pass the bill.

As the House measure faltered, a companion bill in the Senate seemed likely to be killed by a GOP filibuster on Thursday for the opposite reason. It breaks the budget limits of sequestration, the automatic cuts required by Washington's failure to strike a bipartisan budget deal.

The twin developments reflect the broader dysfunction in Washington over the budget. All sides want to reverse the crippling sequestration cuts but a partisan impasse over tax increases sought by President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies and cuts to so-called mandatory programs like Medicare and food stamps demanded by Republicans shows no signs of breaking.

Congress leaves Washington this week for a five-week vacation; the battle will be rejoined in the fall.

Cuts in the House transportation measure were made deeper by a Republican move to cut an additional $40 billion-plus from domestic programs and transfer the money to the Pentagon. That left the transportation measure $10 billion, or about 18 percent, below the Senate's bill.

Rogers, who often is cautious in his public statements, issued an unusually harsh blast, saying halting debate on the measure reflected a failure of Republicans to follow up on their promises to cut spending with binding legislation.

"With this action, the House has declined to proceed on the implementation of the very budget it adopted just three months ago," Rogers said. He said the failed transportation and housing measure was the first major attempt by Republicans to pass an appropriations bill at levels consistent with the sequestration cuts and that the failure of the bill meant it was time for a new approach.

"The House, Senate and White House must come together as soon as possible on a comprehensive compromise that repeals sequestration, takes the nation off this lurching path from fiscal crisis to fiscal crisis, reduces our deficits and debt, and provides a realistic topline discretionary spending level to fund the government in a responsible - and attainable - way," Rogers said.

Some House conservatives vow to oppose every spending measure, while the cuts in the bill may be too deep for more moderate Republicans. Also on Wednesday, a bitterly divided Appropriations Committee debated a $24.3 billion measure funding the Interior Department and the Environmental Protection Agency at levels 19 percent below those passed earlier this year.

A spokesman for GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy of California said the Republican majority's top vote counter was confident he would have been able to round up enough votes to pass the bill if there were more time for debate.

The move comes as companion legislation in the Senate may be filibustered to death on Thursday by Republicans because it exceeds budget levels called for under the automatic budget cuts.

"Voting for appropriations legislation that blatantly violates budget reforms already agreed to by both parties moves our country in exactly, exactly the wrong direction," Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.

"The collapse of the partisan transportation and housing bill in the House proves that their sequestration-on-steroids bills are unworkable, and that we are going to need a bipartisan deal to replace sequestration," said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., chief author of the Senate bill. "And while we work toward that, we should pass the bipartisan Senate transportation and housing bill and show our constituents that we are putting them and their communities above partisanship and political games."

Google Calendar for Android gets crossdevice notification sync

The simplest updates are sometimes the best. See the latest update to Google Calendar for Android as an example: the release adds notification syncing between Android devices, saving the trouble of clearing multiple alerts while hopping from tablet to phone and back. That's the only major addition, but it could represent a big time saver for anyone with a busy schedule. If you're in that camp, you can grab the new Calendar now through Google Play.

Conn. warns of dire climate change consequences

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut environmental officials are warning of dire consequences from climate change that will affect agriculture, dams and levees, waterfront habitats and public health.

For example, sea level rise will leave Hammonasset Beach State Park, among Connecticut's most popular state parks, mostly inundated by sea water by the end of the century, according to a new report by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Most agriculture in Connecticut is likely to be "highly impacted" by climate change "and most of these potential impacts are negative," Monday's report said.

Maple syrup, dairy, warm weather produce, shellfish and apple and pear production will be affected by changes in temperature and the abundance of rain or lack of it, which could reduce production yields, lead to contamination of agricultural goods such as shellfish and the need for costly infrastructure to compensate for the damage.

Climate change is "going to require some adaptation," said Agriculture Commissioner Steven Reviczky.

"You can see what's happening," he said. "The intensity of storms is pretty significant. The damage has been equally significant."

Connecticut was hit by three major storms in 14 months: Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011, followed by a freak nor'easter two months later and Superstorm Sandy in late October 2012. This summer, four tornadoes touched down in Connecticut, with one storm in north-central Connecticut on July 1 damaging tobacco netting and other farm equipment, buildings and crops.

The report said climate changes are projected to be less in the Northeast, particularly for rain and snow, than the rest of the country. Connecticut agriculture as a result can take advantage of the projected longer growing season.

The legislature required the Governor's Steering Committee on Climate Change to evaluate the projected impacts of climate change on agriculture, infrastructure, natural resources and public health and develop strategies to reduce the impacts.

Infrastructure would be most affected by changes in storms and rising sea level, which could cause substantial structural damage. Efforts and technology would be costly to reduce the impact of the damage, the report said.

In addition, natural resources most at risk from climate change are cold water streams, tidal marshes, open water marine areas, beaches and dunes, freshwater wetlands, offshore islands, major rivers and forested swamps.

Cold water streams could become warm, tidal marsh and offshore islands could be submerged and critical species that depend on the habitats could be lost. The damage caused by climate change would join other threats such as development and invasive species.

Nurse details anesthetic treatments for Jackson

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michael Jackson had a high tolerance for certain drugs and wasn't always forthcoming with his medical history, a nurse anesthetist who treated the singer testified Thursday.

Witness David Fournier told jurors he had worked with Jackson for a decade until the relationship ended in 2003, when Fournier refused to participate in a medical procedure.

Jackson was acting "goofy" and was slow to respond to standard questions before a scheduled cosmetic surgery that was canceled after Fournier refused to administer an anesthetic, he said.

The incident came a few months after Fournier said he had to help Jackson breath while undergoing another procedure and later determined that Jackson had not disclosed a new medical condition.

"He wasn't honest with me," Fournier said.

At the time, Jackson had an implant in his abdomen to block the effects of Demerol and other opiate drugs.

Fournier testified that he had given the singer a relatively large dose of a powerful anesthetic and needed to know how Jackson was going to react.

Fournier testified as a defense witness in a negligence case filed by Jackson's mother against AEG Live LLC, the promoter of Jackson's comeback shows.

Katherine Jackson claims the concert promoter failed to properly investigate the doctor who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter for giving Jackson an overdose of the anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid in 2009.

AEG denies it is liable for Jackson's death. Its lawyers have said Jackson hid his prescription drug use from nearly everyone.

Fournier said his incomplete medical records show he administered propofol to Jackson at least 14 times between 2000 and 2003. He estimated he gave the singer the drug numerous other times over the years for a variety of cosmetic and dental procedures.

He noted in his records that Jackson had a high tolerance for certain drugs, which Fournier said could be attributed to a variety of factors, including genetics.

During cross-examination, Fournier said Jackson never requested any specific drugs, including propofol, during procedures or asked to be sedated for longer than was necessary. He said the singer didn't exhibit any drug-seeking behavior or signs that he was doctor-shopping.

Fournier said he knew that Jackson had received an above-average number of anesthetic treatments over his lifetime, and many were related to procedures needed after Jackson was badly burned in a shoot for a Pepsi commercial in 1984.

Fournier said it was not common to administer an anesthetic during cosmetic procedures, but the ones done on Jackson were complex and involved dozens of injections. Some of the procedures were near Jackson's eye and sedation was necessary to keep him still, Fournier said.

Fournier also said he never had any indication that the singer was using propofol as a treatment for insomnia.

Jackson's physician Conrad Murray had been giving the singer nightly doses of propofol as Jackson prepared for his ill-fated "This Is It" shows.

Dear Prudence,
I am a hormonal young woman and was craving an easy hookup, so I tempted fate (and horny dudes) on the Internet. Fate (and the dudes) took the bait, and of the hundreds of responses I received, one stood out because he accidentally attached a professional summary. I found out it was a man who works in my field, and is a fair number of years my senior. We met up; we hooked up; we became friends. He and I are both unmarried and unattached, but neither of us wants to move have a romantic relationship with each other. I have now begun to date closer to my age group, so I don't want to share playtime with him anymore, but haven't told him yet. Being entry-level in the field, I could really use a mentor and have excellent access to this guy. I really don't want to exploit him or make him feel rejected or awkward, and I want to be as professional as possible to keep suspicions of "secret lovers" at bay. Two questions: 1) Is it OK to pursue his help with my career, maybe in a formal informational interview or by asking for introductions? And 2) How do I go about this tactfully? Connect with him on LinkedIn and send a formal email to his work address?

Dear Babe,
I can just hear the kind of glowing recommendation your hookup can give you: ?Juliette has a wide-ranging skill set. She?s always ready for action and throws herself passionately into any task. She has the flexibility to be considered for a variety of positions.? You have a rather naive idea of what a mentor is and how you get one. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, in her book Lean In, says she hates when young women, some she barely knows, ask if she will be their mentor, the way little girls ask each other to be best friends. She writes of women your age: "We need to stop telling them, 'Get a mentor and you will excel,' Instead we need to tell them, 'Excel and you will get a mentor.' " You have exceled with this older man, all right, but not in a way that he can convey to his colleagues. Sure, you selected him to relieve your urges not just because of his personal skills but also his professional ones. Given that, it would have been fine for you to have engaged in a little pillow talk about your mutual vocation. But now that your assignations are done, you can?t expect he?ll welcome your showing up on his work networks or at his office. He knows you as someone who?s on the make, but in the wrong context. However, since you say you two have become friends, you should meet him for drinks and explain that while you?ve really enjoyed your adventures, you?re looking for something more permanent with someone your own age. Then say you?d like to stay in touch. If he agrees, when you get together for lunch, at some point ask his advice on how to move up in your field. For the future, keep in mind it?s better not to look for a mentor when you?re both out moonlighting.

Dear Prudence: Not-So-Secret Life

Dear Prudence,
I am a single female physician in my mid-30s. I had a deep intellectual and (brief) romantic connection with my much older mentor. Now, I can?t figure out how to let go. "John" is over 20 years older than I am, divorced with grown children. He?s taught me everything I know about being a doctor. We delighted in each other?s friendship and a mentor/prot?g?e relationship for most of the past decade. I was moving away after my fellowship and we both became emotional that we couldn?t see each other regularly. We got romantically involved at that point and it felt so natural. We acknowledged our love but John said no to a committed relationship. I want marriage and children and he said he wanted neither again. He said he wanted me to be with someone who could give me all that. He?s also a self-declared womanizer. Since then we continue to have confusing contact. He provides me with guidance in practicing medicine. We have intimate chats, and occasionally physical intimacy when he comes to my city. I know it?s best for me to cut him out completely, but it?s so hard to let go. I can't imagine how I will practice medicine without being able to call him, and I would miss him as a friend. How do I keep the connection but ready myself to pursue a real romantic relationship?

Dear Heal,
This is revealing examination, doctor, of the dark side of mentorship. No, it?s not just the matter of you two becoming lovers. It?s that your dependence on John is keeping you stuck psychologically. You can?t imagine making your way in your career without the constant advice and reassurance of someone you have elevated to godlike status. John may indeed be the William Harvey of his day, but surely he must hope that as he ages and medicine advances, you will eventually surpass him as a clinician. You already know consulting with colleagues makes you better at what you do, so at this point you should have a circle of people you turn to, not just one oracle. ?For the sake of argument (sorry to inject this thought) let?s say John suddenly drops dead. You?d feel bereft, but you wouldn?t close up your practice because you can no longer turn to him for advice. If for your own emotional health you need to cut him out of your life, recognize you will go on just fine. Being clear about that may give you the strength to maintain a just-friends relationship with John. Stop having sexually charged conversations, and sex, with him. Tell him he?ll always have a special place in your heart, but you two have to go back to being colleagues. Since he?s admittedly always juggling a bunch of women, it perhaps will come as a relief to him. I?m no doctor, but the medical facts are that since you are in your mid-30s and want children, you don?t have a lot of time to waste in finding a partner. Don?t ?ready? yourself for a life post-John, start living it now.

Kings Mountain football depending on young players

Kings Mountain, NC (WBTV) -Kings Mountain Head Coach Greg Lloyd has some great young talent returning.

Five starters on offense and six on defense featuring two of the more dynamic

athletes in the conference in Xavier Johnson and Tico Crocket.

Johnson, a rising junior, led the Big South Conference in receiving last season

and Crocker, also a junior, will be outstanding on both sides of the ball.

The defense will be anchored by inside LB senior Jacob Miller--a two year starter.

The big question will be the inexperience of new QB Brandon Bell.

It's all part of the youth movement at Kings Mountain and the coaching staff

does not consider it to be a bad thing.

How to Do Local Marketing and Dominate The ... - Blogging Tips

Small businesses owners who run across this post really need to listen to this carefully. The world is changing and if you can get your mind wrapped around the fact that the internet is the way of the future, and then you may have a fighting chance to succeed. The explosion of the mobile phone and more and more laptops being sold annually, comes with the truth that the internet is at our finger tips every single day.

It would be wise to have that local presence online for every keyword that surrounds your local market in your area. This is how you should market your business if you are looking to stay ahead of the game and keep those competitors guessing on how you guys continue to be so successful.

Before you even stiff a bit of success online you must first understand 5 factors of the internet and how your potential customers use it to find what they?re looking for.

The sad truth is that thousands of businesses are closing their doors and the stats say it maybe getting even worse for the coming year. I say this because many of the offline businesses are not thinking outside of the box of marketing. If you don?t want to become one of these sad stories, then it?s best that you think about more creative marketing.

Just know that everyone has a mobile phone these days, and due to the creation of the ?prepaid phones? now anyone can get a phone that is internet ready. That means that people are out and about searching for what they?re looking for and not caring too much about that big Yellow book or even the newspapers.

Think about this..the research shows that two-thirds of the people are going online to find that hair salon, clothing store or the best restaurant in that city. This should tell you if you?re not listed in those top positions, then chances are your missing out and risks getting run out of the town by small businesses who utilize the internet. Thanks to me.. I created 5 awesome local marketing tips that will at least get you on the road to success.

?

Get Listed?

Local SEO and BloggingThe first thing you need to do which is what I tell all my clients, is to get listed in every online business directory you can. From Google Places, Yelp, Super Page, Manta to Angie?s List and many more that are available to you. These places will give you a chance to submit all of the information about your business so you can start to build some form of an online presence. This won?t be enough so let?s cover some more tips that you can setup.

Get a Website?

There is nothing worse than seeing a local business that doesn?t have a website. To be honest with you, I?m always saying that if you don?t have a website then you really don?t have a business because there is no way for it to grow virally. Get productive and get a website setup that only really has to include the home page, contact page, and a page that covers your products or services. By doing this it allows you to take the steps to further your on page seo to insure people locally can find you.

On Page SEO?

I?m not going to dive deep down into on page seo, because I would be writing for days. To give a simple undertaking of it then I will say it would be wise to use keywords targeted to your business on your website?s given pages. Meaning, if you have an Ice Cream shop in Shreveport La, then I will say have that in the title of those pages and use it a couple of times in your body text. This pretty much tells the search engine that this page is about this or that so lets rank it accordingly. SEO goes a lot deeper than that but that?s the overall version of it to at least get you some form of online presence.

Place a Link?

This is a pretty simple thing to do if you already have a website and just need to start building more traction. One creative and neat local marketing tip is to go out and search for all of the local community type websites in your area. Such as churches, local groups, Lions Clubs and even the local newspaper. Just simply ask if they can place a link from your website to theirs and see what they say. Now the worst thing they can say is no but if you never ask then you will never know. By doing this you?re now listed on some high authority websites in your community which will give more credibility to your business.

Get Social?

This social media world is going crazy and everyone is using it from young to old. This sort of engaging should motivate you to get one the likes on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. From here you can setup a business page and start to tell your existing customers to follow you guys on these networks. Plus this can become a center ground for conversations about your product or services and consumers can share their experience which will turn into viral marketing.

Local Marketing 101

Finally I would like to say, if you want to be productive online then you must eliminate distractions if you will be doing the work yourself. Think about blocking websites like facebook and twitter so you can stay productive on completing tasks to grow your business online. The advance guide of how to block websites is a great manual that will teach you exactly how to eliminate those distractions. If you can do that, then the rest will come as you continue your marketing.

Louisville manager Jim Riggleman moves past stormy breakup with Washington Nationals

Jim Riggleman's current four-day visit to Syracuse is as close as he wants to come to re-living the dramatics that resulted in his walking away from the Washington Nationals manager's job two seasons ago.

Riggleman is now the skipper of the Louisville Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The Bats are in town for a four-game set against the Syracuse Chiefs, the Nationals' affiliate.

Under different circumstances, Riggleman could be in line to manage some of the current Chiefs when they reach Washington. But in June of 2011, Riggleman abruptly and surprisingly took a stand by quitting his job as manager of the Nationals.

Riggleman was upset that Washington had not yet picked up his contract option for 2012 and felt the issue at least deserved a discussion. When that talk didn't come, Riggleman resigned.

Monday, before the first game of the Syracuse-Louisville series, Riggleman declined to discuss his decision in specifics.

"It's history now. I'm just in a good place with what I'm doing. I have a lot of great relationships in Washington,'' he said.

"People read articles. There's no way for me to address that without bringing on negativity. That's been hashed out a lot.''

Riggleman has also managed the Padres, Cubs and Mariners He managed Double-A Pensacola last year before getting the Bats' gig this season. Riggleman said he remains good friends with Syracuse manager Tony Beasley and before Monday's game checked in with some of the Chiefs he knew from his days with Washington.

"I'm a baseball junkie,'' Riggleman said. "I follow everybody.''

In light of his having to work his way up through the minors again, Riggleman danced around the issue of whether he would have handled anything differently in Washington and indicated no particular urgency in getting another major league job.

"I did what I did. I was prepared for the consequences. It didn't take me long (to get another job),'' he said. "The goal (in the minors) is to get these players ready for the next level. What happens to the managers in the minor leagues is sometimes a by-product of what opens up. It (returning to the majors) is certainly not something that's in the forefront of my mind. When the umpire says 'play ball,' your competitive juices are flowing.''

At least 75 dead in China earthquakes

RESCUERS have braved landslides and blocked roads to help victims of twin earthquakes in northwest China that killed 89 people and injured almost 600.

The tremors in Gansu province - with magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.6 - triggered landslides which buried often crudely constructed local houses, government-run broadcaster CCTV reported.

Pictures from the scene showed simple buildings reduced to rubble, with pieces of corrugated metal roofing scattered over the wreckage.

The government of Dingxi city in Gansu said on a social media account that 14 people remained missing.

Almost all the confirmed dead were in Min county, where a medicine factory employee said he saw tower blocks shake "ferociously" when the quake struck.

"I was in the workshop. I felt violent shaking and so I ran to the yard of the plant immediately," said the man, surnamed Ma.

"Our factory is only one floor. When I came to the yard, I saw an 18-storey building, the tallest in our county, shaking ferociously, especially the 18th floor."

An official at the provincial earthquake bureau said more than 1200 buildings collapsed and 21,000 were severely damaged, adding that 371 aftershocks had been recorded.

Zhu Wenqing, a 40-year-old farmer in Min county, told Xinhua news agency he had just got up when his house started shaking.

"I escaped immediately on hearing a 'bang' and feeling the tremor," he said, adding that his house collapsed after several aftershocks.

Nearly 3000 firefighters, police, soldiers and local government workers had been sent to the area, Xinhua said, but rescue efforts are being hampered by landslides and roads which had been blocked by heavy rain in previous days.

She told HELLO! magazine: ''This is about being together forever. There's no one who can make me happier. This is my fairytale.

''I'm not remotely nervous about marrying Lincoln. That to me is the most wonderful thing in the world.''

Denise wore a lemon-coloured sleeveless gown on her big day and was delighted to be joined by 260 guests, including her 'Loose Women' co-stars Lisa Maxwell, Carol McGiffin, Shobna Gulati and Andrea McLean.

She said: ''This is my dream day and it has been quite overwhelming that so many have flown to be here.

''It was like walking in one of those weddings in an American movie. Every time I watched one of those I've thought I'd love to get married like that.''
