Lenovo ThinkPad X230 review

Image

Today is May 31, 2012, the day Intel finally revealed specifics on its dual-core Ivy Bridge processors. That means the month of June is going to be teeming with new laptops, many of them packing Intel's latest chips. Lenovo's 12-inch ThinkPad X230 will be one of them when it goes on sale June 5th, and it happens to be the first machine we've tested with one of Intel's dual-core-flavored CPUs. But make no mistake: the X230 brings more than just a speed bump. With this generation, Lenovo overhauled its signature keyboard, opting instead for an island-style layout with wider-spaced keys. Rounding out the list is a 300-nit IPS display, a battery rated for nine hours of runtime and, of course, that brand-new Core i5-3320M CPU. So how much better is the performance? Is it a good deal for $1,249? And what to make of that revamped keyboard? Find the answers to all those questions after the break.

Tom Barrett Campaign Flooded With Calls After Spam Text Messages Label Mayor 'Union Puppet'

WASHINGTON -- The phones at Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's (D) gubernatorial campaign headquarters were clogged all day Tuesday after an unsolicited text message went out to cell phones accusing Barrett of being a "union puppet" and telling Wisconsinites to call his office and complain.

The message, from "WI@obamasaliar.com," read: "Tom Barrett is a Union Puppet who will give Union Thugs everything they want. Call & ask why 414-271-8050." The number goes to Barrett's office.

View an image of the message, passed along to The Huffington Post by a Wisconsin source:

Barrett spokesman Phil Walzak said the calls began Tuesday morning. The phones in the office were operational, but "clogged" during the day. The calls continued into Tuesday evening. Walzak blamed the campaign of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and his allies.

"We know that someone is playing a dirty trick on Tom Barrett. It has to be either Gov. Walker or an ally of Gov. Walker who is behind this," "Walzak said. "The sole purpose is to disrupt this office's operations. ... We have been able to complete our tasks and continue moving our ball down the field with no problem, despite this attempt at a disruption."

Ciara Matthews, spokeswoman for Walker's campaign, called Walzak's accusation "ridiculous." She said the first the governor's campaign heard of the text message was from the media. The campaign also started receiving random calls -- from Wisconsinites who believed the Walker campaign was behind the texts and wanted to complain or compliment.

"Once again, Tom Barrett and his campaign, with absolutely no evidence to back up their claim, is making an outrageous accusation of Gov. Walker and his campaign," said Matthews. "This is a complete figment of their imagination. Our campaign had absolutely nothing to do with these text messages. We don't know where they came from, or who is behind them. This is becoming habitual for the Barrett campaign. Something happens that they don't like, and they just make an accusation out of the blue."

Daniel Bice of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that one woman who received the message said that all the members of her family who have Sprint phone service received the text.

Walzak told The Huffington Post that the campaign heard from a significant number of Democrats and Barrett supporters who received the message and were "fired up even more as a result of these dirty tricks."

Scott Goodstein was the external online director for Obama for America and is founder of Revolution Messaging, a progressive strategy firm that has been working to expose text-message spamming in political campaigns. His group is running a petition opposing the tactic.

"Each year we see technology used to encourage people to get out the vote," he said. "Sadly these innovations end up in the hands of evil when the stakes are high. What we started during the Obama '08 campaign, to use opted-in text messaging to increase voter participation, has quickly been sabotaged by the right-wingers that conduct voter suppression through the very same mobile gateway. These spam text messages should be stopped and we need the public to speak out against this spam tactic. This is no different than auto-calls being used in the early 90s to increase turnout. ... These spam text messages are even worse -- because not only are they annoying and misleading, they actually cost consumers money to receive the SMS."

Voters go to the polls on June 5 for the recall election.

The Nose Knows: Telling Age Based On Scent

Our sense of smell is often overlooked. After all, our 20 million smell receptors pale in comparison to the 220 million found in the noses of man?s best friends. We don?t take credit for our ability to distinguish thousands of different smells, even in minute quantities, or how our brains can form strong and lasting memories of scents from a very young age. Yet of all our senses, smell is the first to develop, and before we can feel or see, our noses are hardwired into our brain?s limbic system and amygdala, the parts of the brain where emotions are generated and emotional memories are stored. Since smell detects chemicals in the air, it can warn us of dangers at a distance, even when our eyes and ears are unable to detect them. But more importantly, because it relies on chemicals, smell is one of the most honest ways animals communicate. Human odors, from the smell of tears to underams, have been shown to affect how we think, feel and act, and although we don?t often realize it, our noses play a key role in how we recognize and communicate with one another.

So perhaps it shouldn?t be surprising that scientists have discovered we can distinguish a person?s age by scent alone. In a study published today in PLoS ONE, scientists document how our noses are able to distinguish older people from middle-aged and younger ones not based on the scent mothballs or denture cream, but based on the smell of their body odor.

While we tend to think of B.O. as a reason to wear deodorant, the chemical complexity of Eau de Self is remarkable. Our personal scents can convey a biological and social information, and are thought to play a role in who we like, how we recognize others, and even how we tell men from women. Babies know their mother?s smell shortly after birth, and at a young age we can distinguish between family members and non-family based on their scent. Research has even suggested that we really do have ?chemistry? with the people we like, as we can smell immune system differences that might factor into attractiveness, and that we might even be able to smell differences in personalities. Yet there is a lot we don?t understand about how our olfactory system works and exactly what information we obtain through our sense of smell. Given that other animals have been shown to distinguish older animals based on smell, Susanna Mitro and her colleagues from Swarthmore College and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden wondered if smells help us distinguish a person?s age.

To find out, the research team placed pads under the armpits of people in three age groups: young (20?30 years old); middle-age (45?55 years old); and old-age (75?95 years old). Young research participants were then told to discriminate between age categories in side-by-side comparisons and to group the smells according to age as well as rate their perceptual properties like how pleasant or strong the smell. The researchers were startled to find that the participants rated the older aged group?s smell as the most pleasant and least intense. ?This was surprising given the popular conception of old age odor as disagreeable,? said co-author Johan Lundstr?m. ?However, it is possible that other sources of body odors, such as skin or breath, may have different qualities.? Participants also rated the smell of women to be far more pleasant than the smell of men. But what the researcher?s really wanted to know was whether they could tell the difference between age groups in head-to-head comparisons ? and they could.

While the participants were unable to distinguish between young and middle-aged scents, the smell of old age was distinctive. ?These data suggest that, akin to other animals, humans are able to discriminate old individuals from younger individuals based on body odor,? write the authors in their conclusion. ?The modest effects suggest a limited impact on our everyday interactions but does support previous reports of a unique ?old person odor?.?

Scientists aren?t entirely sure what makes the smell of older adults different from that of younger people. Studies have found that certain chemicals are present in different levels in older body odor, suggesting that these compounds may serve as biomarkers for old age, but the relevance of these chemicals to age determination has yet to be tested explicitly, and it is unknown whether these chemicals can be detected well by our noses. It?s also unclear whether the ability to distinguish age changes over time. This study focused on young participants as the odor-sniffers, yet it?s possible that the ability to tell age is age-dependent. Older people may lose this ability, or people may be more able to tell ages that are strikingly different from their own. It?s also unclear if the ability to distinguish age has any evolutionary relevance, or if it is simply a byproduct of our more-acute-than-we-think sense of smell.

The researchers also expressed that their study was careful to keep the body odors pure, and thus it is unclear how the scents of hygiene products might affect their results. Does wearing Old Spice actually make a guy appear older, for example? Or does a flowery perfume enhance the youthfulness of a woman? While this study did not explore these questions directly, it has created a foundation for future studies, which may lead to a better understanding not only of our innate ability to determine age by smell but also how our hygiene routines and how product choices affect how we are perceived by others. I can?t wait to see scientists build off these results!

For-profit schools jump to enroll military spouses

MIAMI (AP) ? "Unleash the dog trainer inside you," urges an ad for the online Animal Behavior College, which makes no bones about whom it's trying to recruit. In television and online ads, it speaks directly to military spouses. The message: You may be able to attend for free.

The ads are working. In three years, 2,255 military spouses have enrolled, and the college has collected more than $2.7 million in taxpayer-funded spousal education benefits from the Pentagon ? among the most of any school in a program called the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts, or MyCAA.

But three years into the MyCAA program, concerns are growing that it's been caught up in a broader gold rush by for-profit colleges to recruit students with military ties and cash the taxpayer-financed tuition checks they carry with them

As the Iraq and Afghanistan wars began winding down in recent years, Congress passed a series of substantial education benefits. The best-known was the post-9/11 version of the G.I. Bill, which updated the original version that put much of the post-World War II generation through college and helped fuel the country's postwar economic prosperity.

MyCAA was a small part of that broader effort, created by the Pentagon to support military wives and husbands. The benefit was seen as long overdue, considering the strains spouses endured during the wars and their high rates of unemployment. It was also a retention tool; by giving spouses a career boost, families might have more stability to stick with a military career.

But MyCAA has become particularly worrisome. Overall, 60 percent of federal education money for military wives and husbands has gone to for-profit schools, compared to 38 percent for the G.I. Bill in the 2011 fiscal school year. Neither program requires schools to be accredited; they only need to be approved by a state agency. And the Pentagon isn't tracking how many MyCAA beneficiaries have earned a degree or found employment.

"The Department of Defense is not doing enough to really oversee this program," said Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, chairman of the House Education, Labor and Pensions committee, which raised concerns about MyCAA in a recent report.

Another concern: Academically, the military spouse benefit is more limiting than other military education benefits including the GI Bill. It can be used only to pursue an occupational credential or an associate's degree, not a bachelor's or graduate degree. That keeps costs down, but sends a grating message to some, especially after the program ? originally open to all military spouses ? was limited to the wives and husbands of junior service members.

"I know many spouses who are junior ranks who want to achieve something more than an associate's degree," said Bianca Strzalkowski, a Marine Corps wife named "Military Spouse of the Year" in 2011 and who has traveled around the country speaking about education issues.

Strzalkowski said there has been an outcry among spouses over both MyCAA's restrictions and its lack of oversight.

"We usually have the same exact aspirations in life as our service members," Strzalkowski said. "The same skill set. If you are going to hold them to a certain standard, hold us to the same standard and make it an effective program."

The Animal Behavior College was started in 1998 by Steve Appelbaum, who previously ran a nationwide dog training business. Students start off with online readings and written assignments, and then are assigned by the school to an externship, with either a mentor dog trainer or at a veterinary hospital in their community.

Appelbaum said the model is a natural fit for military spouses because it can be done from anywhere. The program costs about $3,000; military spouses comprise less than 25 percent of their total business, he said.

"It's still a good chunk of students but it's certainly not what the school is living on," Appelbaum said.

Prisca Crisp, 25, used MyCAA to enroll in the school's dog training and veterinary assistant programs and graduated in 2010. Since then, she's approached six different animal hospitals looking for employment but has not found a job in the field.

"I've been going online and posting my resume everywhere," Crisp said.

Twenty-five percent of military spouses are unemployed, about three times higher than for the general population, according to the Department of Defense. Most want to work, but holding a steady job is challenging. Military families move frequently, leading to short-term employment and gaps in resumes. And some career fields can be harder to continue in certain parts of the country.

Pursuing a college degree can be just as challenging. Strzalkowski herself has enrolled in five different colleges since 1999, starting at a new school each time her family was transferred, and often finding her previous credits weren't accepted.

"I have taken an intro to business course at three different schools," she said.

The MyCAA program is designed to help spouses find a "portable" career ? a job in a high growth, high demand industry with likely openings no matter where they are stationed. That can include everything from baker or cosmetologist to mechanic or librarian.

Three years in, more than 3,000 schools have been approved to receive MyCAA dollars and 147,432 spouses have enrolled in courses. Department of Defense figures indicate course persistence is quite high: Spouses successfully completed 87 percent of the courses they were enrolled in during the 2011 fiscal year. However, the Pentagon doesn't yet know how that translates into degrees and certificates awarded, or job placement rates.

"You have to assume, I guess, and maybe this is wrong, but those that are using the funds for an occupational license or credential, that's what the funds are actually used for, to obtain that license or credential," said Aggie Byer, director for military spouse education at the department. But, she said, a thorough review is under way.

Part of the reason why there isn't data on outcomes like number of degrees granted and graduation rates is that many of the programs are not overseen by the U.S. Department of Education. Because schools like Animal Behavior College do not collect Title IV financial aid from the government, they are exempt from outcome-tracking as well as other federal regulations designed to protect students.

Harkin noted military spouses have just one chance to receive the benefit, and could be left at a significant disadvantage if, for example, they later try to transfer to a two- or four-year college degree program and find their credits aren't accepted.

"This money really should be used to help these spouses to go community colleges, for example, or to get a quality online program that is approved and accredited," Harkin said.

For spouses like Ivanna Fernandez, whose husband is in the Air Force and currently deployed in Qatar, the MyCAA benefit is one of their only opportunities to get some form of higher education paid for by the military.

The 20-year-old Florida native has moved twice with her husband, working odd jobs and caring for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy her mother-in-law gave her as a wedding gift.

Last year, she went online to search for a dog trainer school. The Animal Behavior College was the first result that popped up. The school's website prominently displays information on how military spouses can apply.

"They leave a little box for you to put your number in, and someone calls you almost within the next 10 minutes," Fernandez said.

Appelbaum, ABC's founder, said the school had not applied for Title IV approval because the relatively low price means most students don't need to take out financial aid to attend. The only approval the college has received is from the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, which does a review of the school's financial resources, faculty, and enrollment agreements, said Russ Heimerich, spokesman for the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

Appelbaum said the school discloses to students that neither a dog training nor a vet assistant certificate is needed to pursue a career in either field. He said a certificate nonetheless helps open doors when seeking employment.

"If you spend 100 hours working at veterinary hospitals, assuming you don't get hired at that hospital, you are going to have a much easier time getting hired than if you just walk in off the street," he said.

Crisp, whose husband has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, said the hospital where she did an externship wanted to keep her on staff but wasn't hiring at the time. She was told she'd get a call back but never did.

In the meantime, she's been working as a pharmacy technician, a field in which she earned a certificate from a community college before claiming her MyCAA benefit. She is doing some dog training on her days off and still has hopes of finding full-time work in the field.

"I just don't want to give up just yet," she said.

Others have had more luck. Sarah Casey, a military wife living near Seattle, found a job at a dog training and daycare facility within two months of moving to her family's current post. She had prior experience working at dog kennels and vet clinics, but still thinks getting the certificate was helpful.

"I gained a lot of knowledge," Casey said.

Fernandez was pleased with her course at ABC, but said she was never told that a certificate wasn't necessary to pursue a dog training career.

"I wasn't aware of that," she said. But, she added: "I wouldn't be able to be a dog trainer, though, without the program."

Fernandez is putting her hopes into making dog training a sustainable career. She's currently shadowing a mentor dog trainer assigned to her by the school and later plans to volunteer at a shelter. College isn't out of the question ? but for that, she'll have to find money elsewhere.

This story is the latest installment in a joint initiative by The Associated Press and Associated Press Media Editors taking a closer look at this latest generation of war veterans as they return to civilian life, and the effect this is having on them, their families and American society.

    >>> in syria , the fallout continues from friday's massacre. some of the worst violence yet in that country. tonight, former u.n. secretary kofi annan is there, trying to salvage a peace deal in tatters as the violence continues. the latest from our foreign correspondent, richard engle.

    >> homs, syria , under attack today by government troops. overnight, syrian forces pounded homa, reportedly killing more than 40 people. the new violence came just hours after the u.n. security counsel condemned syria for friday's massacre in hula. horrific, even by the standards of a year of fighting. more than 100 people killed, most of them women and children . new video shows the attack as it started. syrian forces appear to shell hula. people run in panic as more artillery rains down. then witnesses say, pro-government thugs went on a house to house killing spree , binding the hands of victims, stabbing them, and shooting them point blank. today, with serious tanks now in hula, u.n. peace broker kofi annan arrived in damascus.

    >> i am personally shocked and horrified by the tragic incident in hula two days ago. annan is losing credibility. syrian activists say his cease-fire is a sham, just a cover for the assad regime's relentless crack down. the deadlock goes all the way to moscow where british and foreign ministers met to discuss syria . the u.n. is clear.

    >> it's part of the behavior of the assad regime, i believe, to commit atrocities and then to try to blame the atrocities on other people.

    >> russia, far less so. their foreign minister blamed both sides for the massacre and opposed regime change . he called for an end of violence but after friday's bloodbath and months of killing, those words rang hollow. for now, action seems blocked by russia. analysts say moscow doesn't want to lose its last ally in the middle east . its only firm foothold in a region cast into chaos by the ongoing upheavals of the arab spring.

    >> nbc's richard engle, thank you.

Potential teacher shortage developing in California's public schools

California could be facing a teacher shortage in the coming years if it doesn't find a way to attract fresh recruits to replace a wave of baby boomers set to retire soon, educational scholars say.

California's teaching population is growing increasingly old, even as fewer young people choose to enter the profession, according to the report, "The Status of the Teaching Profession 2011" by the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning at WestEd, a Sacramento-based research institute.

Between 2001 and 2010, the number of annual retirements among the state's teachers nearly doubled from about 8,700 to 15,500. And the problem is no different locally.

"We know a lot of the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire housing boom occurred in the `70s and `80s," said Peggy Kelly, dean of the College of Education and Integrative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. "When you kind of do the math on that, you know that the staff of those schools graduated in the late `60s, `70s, and early 80s. They're up there in age."

At the same time, the number of people entering the teaching profession is dropping off.

In 2001, first- and second-year teachers made up 15 percent of the state's teaching pool, according to the report by the CFTL. By 2011, that number had fallen to 5 percent.

Perhaps even more telling is the fact that the number of students enrolling in teacher-preparation programs fell from about 77,000 in 2001 to 36,500 in 2010.

    "We in teacher prep

have seen an enormous drop in enrollment," Kelly said.

Michael Drange, president of the Garvey Educators Association, said the state's constant budget problems may be discouraging young people from becoming teachers.

Each spring, school districts statewide go through a process of pink-slipping, or laying off, their teachers as a precautionary measure to ensure they can meet their budget for the next year. Because pink slips are handed out based on seniority, it is the newest teachers who are laid off first, though some are rehired before the fall if districts have the money.

"We have had a lot of layoffs here in our district," Drange said. "There are some young teachers that have been laid off several years in a row."

Drange said some of those teachers can't find work in another school district and end up leaving education altogether.

"The thing is once you get laid off, there's no other work to be found," Drange said.

The report also implicates tightening state and federal education standards for making it more difficult to enter the profession.

Whereas in the past, districts were willing to hire teachers with partial credentials, the federal No Child Left Behind Act has made that less likely, the report says.

Mike Sullivan, who has spent nearly 30 years working for school districts around the San Gabriel Valley and now works part-time as a substitute teacher, said increased regulations and red tape can be very frustrating for new teachers.

"In the old days you could get a lifetime credential and you were done," Sullivan said. "Now it's a five-year credential that has to be renewed. Not only that, you have to take so many tests."

    Districts prepare

Both Kelly and Holly Jacobson, director of the CFTL, said school districts need to begin preparing for for a teacher shortage, even if tight finances prevent them from doing much hiring right now.

"One-hundred-thousand elementary kids are expected to arrive in the next five years," Jacobson said. "I think they need to be tracking their data really closely."

Kelly said Cal Poly Pomona has begun discussing partnership possibilities with local school districts, so graduating college students will be able to make a seamless transition into the workforce.

"The forward-thinking districts are beginning to prepare and that's where these partnerships come in," Kelly said. "We don't want a replay of 2001-2002. They were taking any warm body that walked in. That's not good for kids because you're training people on the fly."

Debbie Kaplan, superintendent of West Covina Unified, said her district hasn't yet experienced a shortage in teachers, but she is concerned about that possibility.

"It does scare me as an educator," Kaplan said. "The stakes are really high."

But Richard Martinez, superintendent of Pomona Unified, didn't seem to think his district would face a critical shortage of teachers any time soon.

Martinez said Pomona Unified is keeping careful track of its potential retirees, so it won't be caught off guard.

"I don't know if we're going to have that massive exodus of teachers in the near future," Martinez said.

And he said there are a large number of laid-off teachers eagerly waiting for jobs. He said when the district posts a job opening, it often gets as many as 300 applications.

Jacobson said that might be true now, but she cautioned districts against assuming those same people clamoring for teaching jobs now will still be there in a few years.

"Right now you probably have a lot of freshly laid off people," Jacobson said. "Five years from now is that pool still a viable pool of candidates?"

Shell?s $4bn lobbying campaign cleared the way for Arctic oil drilling (Ross)

Alice Ross writes at The Bureau of Investigative Journalism:

Offshore oil drilling in the Arctic has long been considered off-limits ? but as the New York Times revealed . . ., a sustained and ingenious campaign by Shell has overcome all objections.

The campaign to win permission to drill in the Arctic is a masterclass in major-league lobbying: Shell has spent seven years and an incredible $4bn (?2.55bn) to win over opponents at almost every stage, from the local Native Eskimo community, through multiple layers of environmental agencies, all the way to President Obama. It even managed to win permission to drill not long after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which involved BP and was one of the worst such incidents in US history.

The granting of Shell?s permits will also spark a new oil rush as more companies seek to join Shell in seeking oil in the Arctic. But many fear that an oil spill in the Arctic could be devastating ? particularly as no technique exists for cleaning oil from ice ? while the rush of industry into the area risks disturbing local wildlife. The fresh supply of oil will also slow the impetus towards more sustainable energy sources.

New York Times reporters John M Broder and Clifford Krauss unpick Shell?s strategy, describing how the company adopted a two-pronged approach focusing on the local community and on Washington.

While many Eskimos depend on oil and energy for their income ? it provides a third of all jobs in the state ? they also revere the natural environment and rely on the ocean for much of their food. They have long been concerned that oil drilling would disturb whale migration rates.

On a local level, Shell faced a canny opponent in Edward S Itta, who campaigned for mayor of his town on an anti-drilling platform. He was happy to play to the myth of the mystical Native and what the reporters call the ?special moral authority? that Eskimos possess in Congress.

After an ill-advised effort at fielding its own candidate, Shell sent in a right-on executive, Pete Slaiby, who embarked on a charm offensive, sponsoring community meetings, serving food, and gamely eating the local delicacy of raw whale meat. Slaiby also made a series of concessions to Itta?s demands ? but at the same time the company was working to isolate him, funding local colleges, village parties and whaling equipment. Itta was eventually forced to accept that drilling was inevitable and negotiated for the best possible deal.

Meanwhile, in Washington Shell took the unusual step of joining an anti-global warming alliance, which gave them access to senior policymakers and helped deflect criticism of the scheme?s impact, says the New York Times.

At the 2008 election the company drew up an action plan for winning over each of the candidates in the event of their victory and retained former politicians who they were close to for an inside line to power ? although Obama?s win caught Shell on the hop, as it had assumed Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic candidate.

The report examines the lobbying that has gone on since his win. The company employs ?three dozen? staff to lobby government officials, according to government registers, and senior Shell lobbyists have visited the White House at least 19 times during Obama?s administration. This is aside from the constant stream of contact with the agencies that would actually grant the permits.

Click here to read the Bureau?s investigation into lobbying?s hidden influence.

?I understood they were doing it, I understood why they were doing it, and it wasn?t as subtle as it should have been,? an official told the New York Times.

Recognising the blunt force power of Shell?s lobbying blitz, environmental groups have backed off according to the paper, choosing to focus on projects where victory is more feasible.

In the end, fuel security and ever-rising oil prices have helped win over President Obama ? and while an activist describes the drilling as ?a reckless gamble we cannot afford?, events such as the Osama bin Laden raid show that Obama, while often cautious, also has a gambling streak.

Barring a major upset, drilling starts in July. As the New York Times points out, ?It is a moment of major promise and considerable danger.?

    Anti-GM wheat crop action planned

Security around an experimental crop in a Hertfordshire field has been increased to prevent any damage during a day of action by opponents.

Campaigners against the genetically modified wheat will be kept away from the Harpenden test site, run by Rothamsted Research, on Sunday.

They are concerned about potential contamination from the cereal, but researchers say it is infinitely small.

St Albans District Council had to apply for permission for extra police powers.

It received consent of the home secretary.

The wheat project aims to see whether the modified crops can deter aphids - a major wheat pest.

Opponents are not against the trial itself, but are worried about it taking place in the open air, and the threat that the surrounding area could be contaminated.

Rothamsted Research says its work has been independently checked and that the possibility of contamination as the pollen is blown in the wind is infinitely small.

St Albans District Council is hoping for a safe, lawful and peaceful protest in a nearby park on Sunday.

    'Decontamination' action

The council's executive leader, Julian Daly, said: "We are particularly concerned that a demonstration on Rothamsted's land may put historic crop trials at risk.

"Continuous trials have been under way there for over 160 years and are of international significance for the future of world farming."

Anti-GM group Take the Flour Back has vowed to "decontaminate" the site unless the research is halted.

On its website it says a walk from a nearby park will take place to the site on Sunday afternoon.

"This action is for everyone who feels able to help remove the GM crop, and for those who wish to show their support for them," it said.

Rothamsted has previously pleaded with anti-GM campaigners not to destroy their experimental plots.
