ENTERTAINING & EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
FOR CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Therapeutic Recreation Department of the Somerset County Park Commission is offering three programs for children with developmental disabilities. The programs will take place at the TR Activity Center, North Branch Park, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater, New Jersey.

Children ages 6 to 13 will have the opportunity to participate in ?Kids Corner,? offering a variety of recreation activities at which they will socialize, make new friends, and enhance leisure skills.

At Cooking Connection participants will roll up their sleeves to mix and measure their way to a great time in the kitchen. Using a variety of basic ingredients, children will learn how to put a new twist on foods from sandwiches to dessert.? The program will run Tuesday, March 5, 12, 19, 26 from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Fee is $40.

Express Yourself is a wonderful first time experience in the art of bringing characters and stories to life. Children will learn to express themselves through theater games, acting exercises, and improvisations while building self-esteem and confidence. The program runs Tuesdays, April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 from 5:30 P.M.to 6:30 P.M. Cost is $65.

Children ages 6 to 11 with a developmental disability who have an interest in Hot Wheels and Matchbox car collecting will enjoy an opportunity to be with friends, view each other's collections, and discuss cars while working to improve social skills. The Model Car Club will meet two times per month on Fridays, March 8, 22; April 12, 26; May 3, 17; June 7, 14 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. The Club is a ?parent and me? program and one parent must stay with their child each week and assist. Cost is $10.

Registration will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis by mail phone, or walk-in with payment to Therapeutic Recreation, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. Space is very limited. The Therapeutic Recreation Department provides recreation opportunities for any child or adult with a developmental disability who needs specially designed programs.? Residents must reside in one of Somerset County's 15 participating communities. TR promotes an active leisure lifestyle that improves social, physical, cognitive and emotional functioning and health while enhancing abilities, using recreation to help people with disabilities to develop and use their leisure in ways that support health, functional abilities, educational needs, independence and quality of life.
