At New York Pain Medicine Physical Therapy (PT), rest assured that you will never be handed over to aides, but will only be treated by a qualified physical therapist throughout the full progression of your care.? Your treatment will take place under the rigorous supervision of Douglas Allen DO, a physiatrist committed to supporting you to achieve your potential, rather than allowing you to be stuck in the revolving door of pain medications.? Together, we will work to bring you to the point where you are educated and able to manage your own condition, and take necessary steps to prevent further discomfort and aggravation.? In addition to reducing your pain and improving your functions, our aim is to educate you as to how to better care for yourself and reduce future risk of injury.

Expectations of Physical Therapy
Most patients in physical therapy are seeking the relief of pain, as well as the improvement of physical function and mobility.? Regardless of the type of injury or onset of pain, there are typically 3 stages of injury and recovery which will dictate the type of care you receive and the time and amount of physical therapy necessary to achieve your goals.
Acute stage:
- often the most painful, marked by increased swelling, inflammation, or immobility
- lasts a few days to several weeks.
- brought on by a specific injury, accident, fall, or simple movement such as bending over
- sometimes caused or exacerbated by the demands of daily life, such as repetitive strain at work or poor posture
For this phase, the goals of physical therapy are to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation.? You will be taught exercises to perform at home.? These exercises are designed to promote increased mobility and better posture, as well as stabilization exercises to limit pain with daily activities.
Subacute stage:
This phase can last several weeks to a few months and is a transition marked by less severe pain and more mobility.? This is a critical stage in which your condition can either improve or reverse if the correct steps are not taken.? In this stage more progressive strengthening and stabilization exercises are introduced.
Chronic stage:
Lasting a few months to years, chronic conditions can get better or worse again if not properly treated.? It is important to consult your care provider as to when it is appropriate to resume activities such as working out at the gym, your choice of sports, or running.? Even if you are no longer in pain, it is important that you complete the full course of your physical therapy to limit future regression.
To get the most from your PT, we recommend 2 -3 visits a week, typically ranging 6 -10 weeks in duration, depending on the severity of your condition.? Initially, an increased frequency of visits is preferred and as you become fluent with the regimen you taper off.?
