Bosnia Seeks to Evacuate Citizens From Syria :: Balkan Insight

Elvira M. Jukic

Bosnia's Foreign Ministry is trying to establish contact with six Bosnian families who have requested evacuation from war-torn Syria but with whom contact has since been lost.

The families asked the Bosnian embassy in neighbouring Jordan to help them leave the city of Allepo, currently the scene of major fighting between government and rebel forces.

Foreign Ministry official Haris Lukovac said the Bosnian authorities have no clue where the families are right now.

?The landline and mobile networks are dead there,? Lukovac said. ?We tried to get information on those six families through radio amateurs but there is nothing new.?

He added that most foreigners in Syria are being evacuated to Jordan from where Bosnia's embassy is trying to reach endangered citizens and their families.

?We are also collaborating with other diplomats working on evacuation of their citizens,? Luikovac said, explaining that many of the 2,000 Bosnians there are married to Syrians.

Bosnian Foreign Minister Zlatko Lagumdzija is in Saudi Arabia attending the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. He met Bosnia's ambassador to Syria in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday.
