Poking around the Vodafone booth at IFA 2012 in Berlin, some new information appeared regarding the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Note 2. A price. What we see here is the pricing for the 16GB LTE version, but the non-LTE Note 2 seems to be carrying the same price.
It's the off contract price that's of particular interest here. That €639.90 price tag translates to £508 or $804 in UK and U.S. pricing respectively. While not necessarily an accurate representation of what the cost may be when the Note 2 makes it to the U.S. it isn't too far off the price we would expect for such a device in the UK.

Flipboard supports video, but it's always been focused on modernizing the reading experience. Until today, that is. The app is taking advantage of YouTube channels to give readers -- sorry, viewers -- a steady stream of video pattered along common themes. Basic feeds for concepts like cooking, music and news sit side-by-side with more esoteric sections for 'influencers,' fashion and (our favorite) science. Is it the end of reading? We don't think so, but it does mean we won't have to hop to another app to get our moving picture fix, which we're sure is as much Flipboard's dream come true as it is ours.

Manufacturing behemoth Foxconn (Hon Hai) has announced a record net loss of $226 million on turnover of $2 billion for the first half of the year. Unsurprisingly, it attributed the loss to the European debt crisis, global economic slowdown and its customers "continuous struggle" for market share. While it made a big push to encourage new customers, capacity far outstripped demand. In order to stem the tide, it's relocating some of its Shenzen-based facilities to sites in Northern China -- and it's also in talks with carriers to become an ODM, building white-label smartphones in the same way that Huawei and ZTE do. While the loss isn't a rosy picture, the company does have nearly $2 billion stashed in the bank, so it shouldn't be worrying too much.

Blackforest Jack chasing his first ever Grade A1 victory at Poole
Blackforest Jack is expected to be strong in the 450 metres flat race at Poole in England on Tuesday, August 28, 2012. He will have to beat some fierce competitors in order to claim a cash prize of ?97 from the Grade A1 event. He has done well in other classes, but his skills will be put under a stern test at this level.
None of the runners participating in the race at Poole have been in dominant form, which will make the competition quite interesting overall. The spectators will definitely enjoy this situation, as there is a lot of uncertainty. However, the punters will have to pick their favourite quite cleverly, as they might lose some cash at the end of the day.
The bookmakers have shown a lot of faith in Big Bucks, as she has done well in this class before as well. She does not have a lot of experience, but still has been around for quite some time and knows how to handle pressure situations. She has been priced 5 to 2 and will definitely be in contention for a victory.
The B. Black?s trained bitch has been running quite regularly at Poole and her performances have been really impressive. She has got very good speed, which will be crucial in today?s race.
However, Blackforest Jack in an equally talented runner and he has won races at this venue in the past. He will enter the event with a starting price of 3 to 1 and the bettors should definitely risk some money on him.
The J. Cheshire?s trainee took part in a few trial runs at the start of his career, which was not unusual, as most of the greyhounds do the same. He then represented his team in different classes and performed really well overall.
Recently, the black dog took part in a Grade A2 race and did a fabulous job in it. He was not rated as the favourite to succeed back then, but stormed to the top by a couple of lengths.
However, Blackstone Gene?s son out of Forest Holly failed to make an impression last time around, finishing in a disappointing fifth place. He will need a much better effort than that in order to take the top spot at Poole today.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. bank earnings rose 21 percent in the April-June quarter and lending to consumers increased, adding to evidence that the industry is strengthening four years after the financial crisis.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said Tuesday that the banking industry earned $34.5 billion in the second quarter, up from $28.5 billion in the second quarter of 2011.
About 63 percent of U.S. banks reported improved earnings as they were able to set aside less for losses on loans. And the number of troubled banks fell for the fifth straight quarter.
Banks became less cautious about lending. Bank loans to consumers increased in most categories, including credit card loans and home mortgages, reversing a first-quarter decline.
"The industry continues to recover at a gradual but steady pace," FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said at a news conference.
Still, the gains in revenue remain "sluggish," Gruenberg said. Total revenue increased only $1.3 billion ? a slim 0.8 percent ? in the second quarter from a year earlier.
Gruenberg said that the industry's bottom line was affected by JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s nearly $6 billion in trading losses revealed recently from a soured bet in its London operation. "It certainly impacted the results, and without that I think it would have been a stronger picture," he said.
JPMorgan reported second-quarter net income of $5 billion, or $1.21 per share, down from $5.4 billion, or $1.27 per share, a year earlier.
Banks with assets exceeding $10 billion drove the bulk of the earnings growth in the April-June period. While they make up just 1.5 percent of U.S. banks, they accounted for about 77 percent of the earnings.
Those banks include Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan and Wells Fargo & Co. Most of them have recovered with help from federal bailout money and record-low borrowing rates.
The number of banks on the FDIC's confidential "problem" list fell in the second quarter to 732, or around 10 percent of all federally insured banks. That compares with 772 troubled banks in the first quarter.
So far this year, 40 banks have failed. That's far below the 92 banks that shuttered last year and the 157 that closed in 2010 ? the most for one year since the height of the savings and loan crisis in 1992.
In the second quarter, fewer bank failures allowed the insurance fund to strengthen. The fund, which turned from deficit to positive in the second quarter of 2011, had a $22.7 billion balance as of June 30, according to the FDIC. That compares with $15.3 billion at the end of March.
The FDIC is backed by the government, and its deposits are guaranteed up to $250,000 per account. Apart from its deposit insurance fund, the agency also has tens of billions in loss reserves.

Munich, Germany August 28 2012: Improved treatment after acute myocardial infarction and less severe patient profile have reduced 30-day mortality over the past 15 years, according to research presented at ESC Congress 2012. The analysis of four French registries from 1995 to 2010 was presented by Professor Nicolas Danchin from the Hopital Europen Georges Pompidou.
Cardiologists recognize two types of myocardial infarction. The first type, ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), corresponds to the sudden, permanent occlusion of a coronary artery supplying the myocardium (cardiac muscle), usually manifesting as a prolonged, intense chest pain (what is known as a heart attack); it is a true medical emergency, as prompt reopening of the occluded artery will lead to myocardial salvage and limit the consequences of infarction. The second type, non-ST-segment elevation infarction (NSTEMI), is caused by partial or intermittent blockage of an artery, and leads to a more progressive and more limited destruction of myocardial cells; it does not usually require immediate coronary intervention.
"Over the past 15 years, the global picture of acute myocardial infarction has undergone profound changes," said Professor Danchin. "First, improvements in biological techniques have led to an easier recognition of myocardial cell death, thereby increasing the number of patients with documented myocardial necrosis (i.e. myocardial infarction) considered to have NSTEMI. Second, major changes in patient management have been implemented, following the results of numerous clinical trials in patients with myocardial infarction."
Every five years since 1995 in France, nationwide surveys of patients admitted to intensive care units for acute myocardial infarction during a one-month period have been implemented. Using data from the four registries from 1995 to 2010, the researchers sought to determine: 1) potential changes in the population of patients with heart attacks; 2) changes in their management; and 3) changes in clinical outcomes.
In all, 10,610 patients participated (1995: 2,152; 2000: 2,320; 2005: 3,059; 2010: 3,079). The proportion of patients with NSTEMI (1995: 29%; 2000: 21%; 2005: 47%; 2010 44%) increased after 2000 because of the generalized use of troponin measurements to detect myocardial necrosis (see figure 1). "Previously these patients would have been considered to have unstable angina," said Professor Danchin. "The distinction is important because unstable angina usually carries a lower risk than NSTEMI."
Mean age from 1995 to 2010 remained stable in NSTEMI patients (68 years) and decreased from 66 to 63 years in STEMI patients. From 1995 to 2010 there were increases in the prevalence of obesity (14% to 22%), diabetes (17% to 21%), hypertension (46% to 54%), current smoking (31% to 34%) and hypercholesterolemia (36% to 43%). "Overall, the patient risk profile is less severe in 2010 than in 1995 for both STEMI and NSTEMI patients, although several of the most common risk factors for developing coronary artery disease increased during this time period," said Professor Danchin.
The initial severity of infarction declined progressively, in particular with fewer patients having signs of heart failure. Professor Danchin said: "This could be because of the efficacy of primary prevention in patients with previously recognised risk factors, or secondary prevention in patients with known coronary artery disease."
Major changes in management were noted across all types of myocardial infarction. From 1995 to 2010 the use of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) increased from 12.5% to 65% in NSTEMI and from 19.5% to 87% in STEMI. In STEMI, the use of emergency reperfusion therapy to reopen the blocked artery increased from 49% to 75%; primary PCI increased from 12% to 60% and fibrinolysis decreased from 37% to 14%. Early use of evidence based medication increased (antiplatelet agents 91% to 97%, beta-blockers 64% to 81%, statins 14 to 90% and ACE inhibitors 46% to 60%). "This shows that the management of all patients with myocardial infarction has improved, with increasing use of recommended interventions and drug therapies," said Professor Danchin.
Thirty-day mortality dropped during 1995 to 2010 from 12.9% to 3.9% for all acute myocardial infarction patients. It fell from 13.7% to 4.4% in STEMI patients and 10.9% to 3.2% in NSTEMI patients (see figure 2). All in-hospital complications significantly decreased.
"Our analysis shows that the early mortality of both STEMI and NSTEMI patients has considerably decreased over the past 15 years," said Professor Danchin. "Our results suggest that the decreases in 30-day mortality and in-hospital complications are due to both the widespread use of coronary angiography/PCI, and earlier use of recommended medications, and the change in overall clinical presentation of the patients resulting in a decreased intrinsic risk.

To be fair to those gentle souls in my life who warned me; I was warned.? In fact, on my bedside table still sit the goat books I read for months before acquiring this little crew of four.? In varying degrees of severity each warned that, despite their angelic appearance at birth, intact (uncastrated) male goats would eventually become oily, smelly, hormone-driven forces to be reckoned with.? I understood all this - obviously!? So many experts agreed on this point that it must actually be fact.? We discussed the alternatives to keeping an intact male.? If you want goats then there's two camps into which you might fall: the goats-as-pets keeper or the goats-as-producer keeper.? Meaning: you either want them to have babies, or you could care less.? As we (Ok, me, just me) are determined to produce dairy products off this little parcel, then there was never any doubt that our goats must have babies since, you know, you don't get milk without kids (I only mention this because people so often ask, "You have baby goats??? That's so cute!? So how much milk are you getting out of those babies?"? It doesn't work that way for people - and it don't work that way for goats, neither - or any mammalian creature).? Therefore, we needed to somehow endeavor to make babies spring forth from the female goats.? Short of immaculate conception, which I now truly wish were possible, we would need to somehow have access to the boy kinds of goatlings.? Many goat owners just keep female goats and closely watch their estrus cycles* - an activity that sounded about as exciting to me as watching slugs being salted.? It requires inspecting the goat's vulva*? on a seasonal basis.? Doing things like watching for arousal* (Ready for me to stop yet?? Yes, me too).? After scientifically determining that the goat is in estrus* - should you have no billy at your immediate disposal - you must load your goat in the car and drive her to a billy at which point you must pay cash money to watch the goats breed* (*Note: these words make me uncomfortable).
Now that we've laid the facts bare, perhaps you'll understand why I chose to just go ahead and have a billy at my disposal.? Not only do these scientific inspections make me uncomfortable, but I'm lazy.? Let's be honest.? While I'll still have to be a scientist about my goats' cycles to make sure they breed at the appropriate time, it can be slightly more imprecise since my billy will be right there.? As in, on my property.? There's no embarrassment of kicking at rocks on a stranger's property, awkwardly waiting for nature to take its course while we make small talk, then shake hands and sign papers to prove that yes, in fact, the deed was done.
So here's the deal.? Despite all of the literature I read and warnings I received about the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde-like transformation that would occur with my buckling and despite how difficult a buck can be when he is in rut (I believe "turned on" is the laymen's term) - despite all of these things - I bought Boss.? Because, and I can assure you without a shadow of doubt, when I met little baby Boss it was abundantly clear that he would not under any circumstance become odorous.? Magically, my little Boss would not sprout wiry goatee hairs, nor would he shoot pee all about his face and onto the back of his legs.? This precious little dude, denying all of the genetic inclinations coded into his DNA, would never accidentally spray pee onto me, rub against me amourously, stick his tongue out sideways and emit the most profane sounds that did ever come out of vocal chords.? He would never do that.
Except he just started doing it.
Lord help me.? Boss has turned from buckling into buck and is fast approaching full billy goat status.? He is more enthralled with his own special purpose than with food and water.? He now follows a strict personal hygiene regiment that begins with washing his face in his own urine and ends with - well - it's worse than that.? I invite you to google "goat in rut" and let the experts on wikipedia enlighten you in a way that I would just rather not, frankly.? The object of most of his affection has fallen to our poor little Willy Boots, the smallest of the bunch who is also male, but is castrated and is therefore spared from the torment of his own hormones.? Aside from having to withstand Boss's frequent and aggressive advances, Willy lives a rather carefree life jumping, spinning, and spitting out indigestible mesquite beans.

The University of Virginia has declined a request to host President Obama for a campaign rally next week, complicating his planned tour of swing-state college campuses to court younger voters.
The school cited the impact of a presidential visit on the university's academic schedule and strained finances as reasons for turning Obama away.
The president's re-election campaign had hoped to rally students on the Charlottesville campus Wednesday on the final stop of a two-day tour aimed at countering the Republican National Convention in Florida.
On Tuesday, Obama will rally with students on the campuses of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, Colo. Classes at both schools began Monday. Classes at UVA are scheduled to begin Tuesday.
Obama campaign officials visited UVA last week to scout possible venues, submitting a formal proposal with the school for two options, university spokesman Carol Wood said. Neither was deemed acceptable.
"The use of either of the desired sites would require closing buildings adjacent to the sites for the entire day," Wood explained in a statement. "The cancellation of 186 classes would occur. ? This would result in an extraordinary disruption of the second day of the new semester."
Wood said the university would also have had to foot the bill for added security measures on campus and along the presidential motorcade route. Because of the school's nonpartisan status, it would have to offer "the same accommodations and bear the same costs" for Mitt Romney, she said.
"While there are certainly financial implications to a state university that has seen faculty and staff salary freezes for the past five years, the primary reasons for declining the offer were related to disruption of the first days of classes," Wood said.
The Obama campaign announced Saturday that the president would still travel to Charlottesville on Wednesday but hold an off-campus rally at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion instead. The venue is roughly 20 blocks from the center of campus.
Wood said Obama campaign officials "completely understood" the decision and justification for not approving the request.
The president's tour, meant to counter the Republican convention in Florida, will highlight "the choice for young voters in this election" and push voter registration and turnout, the Obama campaign said.

The Organization of American States declared "solidarity and support" for Ecuador in its dispute with Britain over granting asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
The meeting of the Americas bloc was convened at Ecuador's request to consider a resolution rejecting any attempt to put at risk the "inviolability" of its embassy in London, where Assange is holed up.
In the resolution, foreign ministers and representatives of the 34-member regional body rejected "any attempt that might put at risk the inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions."
The text, adopted by consensus after five hours of arduous negotiations in Washington, also expressed "solidarity and support for the government of the Republic of Ecuador."
It urged Ecuador and Britain to "continue to engage in dialogue in order to settle their current differences in accordance with international law, taking into account the statements made recently by authorities of both governments."
Reservations about the resolution were expressed in footnotes by the United States and Canada, OAS members who are also firm British allies.
The diplomatic confrontation over Assange, who has been staying at the Ecuadoran mission since June 19, reached a new pitch last week after Quito announced it was granting the 41-year-old Australian activist asylum.
Correa expressed relief at receiving assurances from London on Thursday that ruled out the possibility of British authorities forcibly entering his country's embassy.
"While it is clear that there was a threat, we understand this message as a retraction of that threat, which we welcome with joy," Correa said in an address broadcast on national television and radio.
Britain's permanent observer to the OAS, Philip Barton, echoed London's statement that it never threatened to enter the Ecuadoran embassy.
"At no time did the UK make any threat against the embassy of Ecuador," he said, calling for a resumption of dialogue.
"We invite the government of Ecuador to resume as early as possible the constructive discussion we've held on this matter to date."
Speaking to the British newspaper The Guardian, Correa insisted that "the window of dialogue has never been closed."
"But we are never going to give up our principles, nor the human rights of Mr Assange," he added.
"As a consequence, we'll continue to demand what we've been demanding from the beginning: if Mr Assange goes to Sweden to face Swedish justice, as is his will and as is our will, he should receive a guarantee that he will not be extradited to a third country."
Correa repeated his demand that London grant Assange "safe passage" to exit the embassy.
Assange took refuge there to escape extradition to Sweden, where he is sought for questioning about sex assault allegations.
He claims that if extradited to Sweden, he would be handed over to the United States, where he fears prosecution over WikiLeaks' release of a vast cache of confidential US government files.
Ecuador is demanding a "public apology" from Britain for allegedly threatening to enter the Ecuadoran embassy in London to arrest Assange.
During the OAS debate, Ecuadoran Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino condemned Britain for what he called the "assault on our sovereignty."
While Britain has said it will not go into the embassy to arrest Assange, it has refused to grant the Australian national safe conduct out of the country.

She wrote a book chronicling her battle with breast cancer three-and-a-half years ago. She was 39.
"I put it all, at the urging of my friends, into a book, my memoir. The good, the bad, the ugly,? Bramer said. ?Some of the proceeds go to help fund medical research for breast cancer."
Bramer has had a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and a dozen surgeries. She's currently cancer-free, but she's the fourth generation in her family to have cancer and knows the importance of research.
One researcher, Jo Ellen Welsh, has been studying Vitamin D and cancer for 20 years.
"We do laboratory studies, animal studies and studied with human tissue," Welsh said.
The study involves how your Vitamin D levels reduce your risk of getting breast cancer as well as fighting it.
"We found is that Vitamin D is a very powerful growth inhibitor of breast cells, so if cells are exposed to Vitamin D, they stop growing," Welsh said.
Results show that Vitamin D is a good protective factor against developing breast cancer and could cut your risk by 30 percent.
Natural Vitamin D comes from the sun and most of us need 10 to 15 minutes a day. A blood test is required to check your levels and if you are low in Vitamin D, and your doctor can prescribe a prescription for it or you can take a supplement.
Some studies indicate taking Vitamin D with calcium may provide moderate protection from breast cancer for pre-menopausal women. The calcium can be taken in pill form or food.
Milk and dairy products are good sources of calcium.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Twenty months into a Congress they have tilted rightward, tea party loyalists are finding that ideological purity can be elusive for conservative lawmakers trying to balance their convictions against constituents' election-year needs.
Rep. Paul Ryan, who has won tea party praise as Mitt Romney's vice presidential pick, had a General Motors assembly plant that was about to be shuttered in his hometown of Janesville, Wis., when he voted for the $14 billion auto industry bailout in 2008. The seven-term House Republican also voted for the $700 billion financial industry rescue that same year.
He has since criticized both efforts by President George W. Bush to combat that year's near economic collapse. Yet his votes ? plus his support for Bush's 2003 debt-financed expansion of Medicare to provide prescription drug coverage ? rankle conservatives to this day and underscore the challenge of adhering to small-government principles when voters' bread-and-butter interests are at stake.
More recently, this campaign season has seen some of the House's most conservative members split over a sweeping farm bill, disaster aid to drought-battered farmers and legislation to finance transportation projects and keep student loan interest rates from ballooning. Such divisions have dampened the expectations of tea party leaders, with some now saying it will take several elections before they win the Washington clout they need.
"No one is going to agree with us 100 percent of the time," Jenny Beth Martin, a national coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, said of members of Congress. "And we do understand they do have to look at what's best for their district and their constituents."
Martin said that most of all, tea party supporters want lawmakers to be firm in their convictions. Out of 240 House Republicans and 47 GOP senators, she said there are fewer than 30 House members and about five senators she can reliably count on for support, with too many others focused on bringing federal largesse back home.
"We just don't have very many visionary people stepping up in our political landscape right now at all," Martin said.
The struggles conservatives face were illustrated just before Congress recessed for August, when the House approved $383 million in agriculture disaster aid, mostly for livestock producers and tree farmers.
Conservatives ended up on both sides of the 223-197 vote. One of the "yes" votes came from Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., who has one of the House's most conservative voting records and whose district has one of the nation's heaviest concentrations of farms.
Huelskamp said he has repeatedly told constituents that they will be affected by efforts to curb federal deficits, including reductions in farm support. A farmer himself, Huelskamp said he voted for the disaster aid because it was paid for by cutting conservation programs.
"I thought it was fiscally responsible," he said.
That wasn't the view of Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a House conservative leader who opposed the bill. He said he wants less federal involvement in the private sector and complained that the savings to pay for the measure's one year of disaster aid was being culled from conservation programs for a decade into the future.
"The first principle is what's good for your country is good for your constituents," Jordan said. "And what's good for your country is not to spend money you don't have."
Divisions like that among conservatives have not been unusual.
The conservative Club for Growth, which advocates lower taxes and less regulation, scores lawmakers' voting records based on bills it considers key.
Of the 46 House Republicans the club considered the most conservative, 27 voted for the disaster aid bill, 17 voted against and two did not vote. On the bill approved in June on transportation and student loans, 28 voted against, 16 voted for and two were absent.
"The reality is most members of Congress look to see what gets them re-elected and that drives their ideology more than a detached view of policy," said Chris Chocola, the club's president and a former House member.
Conservatives showed their clout last month when they prevented House GOP leaders from bringing a massive bill renewing agriculture programs to a vote in the chamber, arguing that its farm subsidies and food stamps were too costly.
Yet even that bill highlighted internal divisions. Four of the most conservative members, as measured by the Club for Growth, had voted for the bill when it was approved by the House Agriculture Committee, while two voted against it.
Tea party-backed Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., opposed the broad bill at the Agriculture Committee, calling it too expensive. He backed the disaster measure on the House floor, arguing that it merely provided money the government committed to in a farm bill four years ago.
"With a drought across the country, there are priorities. As conservatives we set our priorities what is important and what is not, and I felt that was part of an obligation," Stutzman said of the disaster aid.
As for Ryan's 2008 votes, he said then that the financial industry bailout would preserve the free enterprise system. On the auto industry rescue, he said his district's economic hardships had been "downright gut-wrenching." Now chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan has since criticized both measures, saying the Obama administration misused them.
Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, which often works with tea party groups, said the organization likes Ryan's willingness to propose conservative budgets but has not forgotten his votes on the bailouts and the Medicare prescription drug expansion.
"We've had our disappointments and arguments with Paul over the years," said Kibbe. "He's definitely not perfect. But in presidential politics, there's no such thing as perfect."

Urmann is a German copyright troll law firm that represents hardcore pornographers, sending shakedown notices to accused downloaders, threatening to publicly link them with porn unless they pay "settlements" to make it all go away. They've revealed that the core of their strategy will be the publication of accusations against police stations, churches and the embassies of conservative Arab nations:
According to comments an Urmann insider made to Wochenblatt, the law firm is planning to target the most vulnerable people first ? those with IP addresses registered to churches, police stations and ? quite unbelievably ? the embassies of Arab countries.
Urmann insists that it is completely entitled to take this action because the law is on its side. The company is leaning on a 2007 Federal Constitutional Court ruling that deemed it legal for law firms to publish the names of their clients? opponents in order to advertise their services. However, there is some debate if the ruling applies since it was targeted at commercial opponents, not regular citizens.
Bernd Schl?mer of the German Pirate Party describes the law firm?s threats to undermine the privacy rights of individuals as ?shocking? and says that Urmann?s actions could be construed as ?legal coercion.
