Former Gophers football player and North Minneapolis community leader, John Williams, died Sunday at the age of 64.
John Williams, a former Gophers football star who went on to play in the Super Bowl and become a Twin Cities business and civics leader, died Sunday at the age of 64.
Williams, who was a dentist in Minneapolis following his NFL career, was out for a walk near his home when he died, friends told the Star Tribune.
He played offensive tackle for the Gophers in the 1960s and was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1968. He was part of the Colts team that won the 1971 Super Bowl and later played several years for the Los Angeles Rams. He retired following the 1979 season at the age of 32.
Williams also had been a member of the Metropolitan Airports Commission?
since 2005, served as president of the West Broadway Business Association, and was a former board member of the Minneapolis Urban League.He is survived by his wife, Barbara Butts-Williams, who serves as the dean of the School of Education at Capella University. She was recently named a member of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, which will oversee the Vikings stadium in downtown Minneapolis.
