20 Apple apps for engineers

Apple this week is celebrating the five year anniversary of its Apps Store. If you go to the store, you?ll notice Apple is giving away five games and five apps to celebrate the anniversary.

When it opened its virtual doors, the Apps Store did so with a mere 500 apps. Now, it showcases more than 900,000, with more than 800 apps being downloaded each second.

In total more than 50 billion downloads have taken place since the Apple App Store?s 2008 launch, with more than $10 billion being paid out to developers.

Mixed in among the whopping number of available apps are a few that engineers, specifically, might enjoy. We?ve created the following list of our own favorites as well as some contributed by engineers in the field.

We?ve broken the 20 apps out into ?Tools? for better everyday engineering and design, and ?Fun? for more hobbyist or personal app enjoyment, including a few comics and games engineers will get a laugh out of.

Poke around. See what you like. And add your own favorite apps for engineers in the comments field below.

Boeing Dreamliner fire investigation under way

By Estelle Shirbon

LONDON (Reuters) - Investigators started work on Saturday to establish the cause of a fire on a Boeing Dreamliner at London's Heathrow airport, a new setback for the high-tech model after it was grounded at the start of the year over battery problems.

The fire broke out on the plane, operated by Ethiopian Airlines, on Friday afternoon, when it was parked at a remote stand with no passengers on board, eight hours after arriving from Addis Ababa. No one was injured.

External scorching could be seen close to the plane's tail, in a different area from the bays containing batteries. There was no official indication of what could have caused the fire.

"The aircraft has been moved to a secure hangar at Heathrow and the investigation has begun," said a spokesman for Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

The AAIB will lead the investigation, he said, working alongside the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing.

Analysts say Boeing will be keen to reassure airlines, travelers and investors over the cause of the fire as quickly as possible but it will be up to investigators to decide how much information to release and when. Under aviation rules there are restrictions on how much companies can say about the details of an ongoing accident investigation.

Meanwhile Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa's top five carriers, said it would continue to fly its Dreamliner fleet.

"We have not grounded any of our aircraft," the carrier said in an emailed statement on Saturday. "The incident at Heathrow happened while the plane was on the ground and had been for more than eight hours and was not related to flight safety."

Separately, engineers from Britain's Thomson Airways were inspecting their own Boeing Dreamliner after it had to turn back during a flight on Friday from Manchester in England to Sanford in Florida because of an unspecified technical issue. Thomson Airways is one of six European airlines owned by TUI Travel, the world's largest tour operator.

BATTERY PROBLEMS

The two incidents are a blow for Boeing particularly as the entire global fleet of Dreamliners had to be grounded for three months, ending in April, after one high-tech battery caught fire and another overheated.

Boeing shares closed down 4.7 percent at $101.87 on Friday, knocking $3.8 billion off the company's market capitalization.

Quoting Mark Mangooni, Ethiopian Airlines' senior manager in Britain, the Financial Times reported that airline staff had discovered a problem with the aircraft's air conditioning system during a routine inspection and had seen sparks but no flames.

The report did not make clear when this had happened. Reuters could not reach Mangooni for comment.

Heathrow briefly closed both its runways to deal with the fire, and a spokeswoman said on Saturday that the airport was back to normal operations, although it was still dealing with a backlog of delays and cancellations due to Friday's incident.

The Dreamliner's two batteries are in electrical compartments located low down and near the front and middle of the plane. Damage to the Ethiopian plane appears to be on top of the fuselage, close to the tail, according to video from the scene on Friday.

(Graphic of key areas of the 787: http://link.reuters.com/zed69t)

Former NTSB Chairman Mark Rosenker said the Heathrow incident was extraordinary, coming so soon after the fleet had returned to service, but warned against jumping to conclusions.

"It's very early. No one knows where the fire started at this point," Rosenker told Reuters, adding it could be something as simple as a coffee pot left on in a galley.

A spokesman for GS Yuasa, which makes the Dreamliner batteries, said he had not received any information on the London fire.

INNOVATIONS

The 787 is Boeing's biggest bet on new technology in nearly 20 years. It cost an estimated $32 billion to develop and Boeing plans to use hundreds of innovations such as its carbon-fiber composite skin and electrical system to enhance other jets.

The 787 Dreamliner fleet was grounded by regulators at the start of the year after batteries overheated on two of the jets within two weeks, including a fire in a parked Japan Airlines plane in Boston.

Boeing was forced to halt deliveries of the jet while it was grounded and airlines stopped ordering the plane at that time. Orders have since resumed and Boeing has logged 83 Dreamliner orders this year, bringing its current order book to 930 planes.

Boeing never disclosed the cost of the three-month grounding but said it absorbed most of the expense in the first quarter while still posting a 20 percent rise in profit. Its shares are up 35 percent this year, even after Friday's loss.

The plane which caught fire in London was the first of the 787 fleet to resume flight after the battery-related grounding.

A person familiar with the aircraft's configuration said the damaged area appears close to galleys and environmental control systems, but added that it was too early to link the fire to any specific equipment.

Several airlines said they were continuing to operate their 787s, including United Continental, Polish airline LOT, Japan Airlines and ANA, the world's biggest operator of the Dreamliner.

Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliners are powered by General Electric GEnx engines.

Alberta criminals favour older Ford F-series trucks to steal, warn police

EDMONTON - Police in Edmonton are pleading with owners of older model Ford pickup trucks to take precautions to prevent theft.

Acting Insp. Malcolm Allan says older model Ford F250s and F350s are being stolen at a rate of about one per day in the Edmonton area.

It's who's stealing them and what they're doing with them that have police urging owners to use a steering wheel locking device.

Allan says the vehicles are being stolen by the career criminal, often times addicted to methamphetamine and sometimes cocaine, heavily involved in property crime and personal robberies.

He says they aren't in the best frame of mind when they steal the trucks and have led police on dangerous chases.

Police also find loaded weapons, and drugs when they make arrests.

The problem is with older model vehicles. He says they worked with Ford dealers and since 2008 changes were made making the vehicles more difficult to steal.

"Essentially it's a problem they have remedied in 2008 models and up, although we've seen some of them stolen as well, but the number after 2008 drops off dramatically," Allan said.

Other provinces don't experience Ford thefts on a level comparable to Alberta.

Teenage Family Member Arrested in Death of Missing Boy | KTLA 5

MENIFEE, Calif. (KTLA) ? Police continued their investigation on Thursday into the death of a Menifee boy, a day after a teenage family member was arrested on suspicion of murder.

austism-menifee-boy

Terry Dewayne Smith, 11

Detectives received a tip around 1 a.m. on Wednesday alerting them to possible remains in the 38000 block of Helen Lane, police said.

?Officers on arrival located a partial grave containing partially exposed human remains,? said Riverside County Sheriff?s Capt. John Hill.

The remains had yet to be identified, authorities said.

However, police confirmed on Wednesday the discovery of a body that fit the description of 11-year-old Terry Smith, Hill said.

A woman from Rancho Santa Marguerita said she was the tipster who led police to the body.

She said that she is intuitive, and her intuition led her to the corner of the yard where the remains were buried.

Authorities called off the days-long search for Terry and interviewed the boy?s family.

?As a result of those interviews, a 16-year-old family member was arrested for murder,? Hill said.

The teenager was not identified.

Terry had been living with his mother, Shawnee Smith, her partner, a 13-year-old girl and a 16-year-old half-brother, according to neighbors.

That half-brother was reportedly the last person to see Terry on Saturday evening, when he was babysitting.

He told police that he was walking to the corner market when he noticed Terry was following him.

He said he shouted at Terry to turn around and go home, but he never saw the boy again, police said.

The manager of the market told KTLA that the 16-year-old brother never came into the store on Saturday night.

?He wasn?t at the market. We had checked our surveillance, our cameras, all the video? nothing,? the woman, who did not want to be identified, said.

Terry was not in his room on Sunday morning, according to his family. Police were called to the family home around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Terry, who answered to the nickname ?Juju,? was autistic but highly functioning, according to his family.

His disappearance set off an extensive search involving law enforcement personnel and hundreds of volunteers.

Their efforts were coordinated in large part via social media, including a ?Find Terry Smith? Facebook page.

Many of the volunteers gathered outside the family home on Thursday night for a prayer vigil. They lit candles and released balloons in tribute to Terry.

Terry?s mother was questioned for several hours and then released, according to investigators. No one else has been charged in connection with the case.

The Smith family released a statement thanking the community for their support. They asked to be given privacy and time to heal.

Anyone with information was asked to call Menifee police at (951) 210-1000 or Riverside County sheriff?s dispatch at (951) 776-1099.

One-of-seven Bizzarrini to emerge from Simeone Museum for ...

Bizzarrini_01_1500

While the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum trots its cars out for a little exercise once a month or so, it takes something extra special for any of the cars on exhibit at the museum to leave the property for a showing. That something extra special is this year?s National Collector Car Appreciation Day, and that car is the 1967 Bizzarrini P538 on display there.

One of only seven such cars ever built, the Bizzarrini was designed in 1966 with the hope of running at Le Mans in 1967 before FIA homologation rules stymied the project. The design work was led by Giotto Bizzarrini, whose portfolio also included shepherding the 250 GTO for Ferrari, plus the Iso Grifo A3C. This P538, owned by New Jersey resident Van Horneff, is one of two powered by a Lamborghini V-12 fed by six Weber carburetors, producing 420hp.

On Friday, the Bizzarrini will head east from the museum in Philadelphia to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where American Collectors Insurance will host a car show celebrating Collector Car Appreciation Day, an annual event that recognizes the impact the collector car hobby has had on American culture. Made possible by U.S. Senate resolution 176, Collector Car Appreciation Day officially recognizes the fact ?that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States.?

ACI?s show will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at its offices at 496 Kings Highway North in Cherry Hill, a few miles east of Philadelphia between state highways 38 and 70. The rain date is Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. For more information, visit AmericanCollectors.com/NCCAD/.
