Utah teens arrested in alleged school bombing plot (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? A Utah high school student bragged to police that he was smarter than the Columbine killers and was plotting with an older student to set off a bomb during a school assembly and escape in a stolen plane, court documents say.

Dallin Morgan, 18, and the 16-year-old boy were pulled out of school Wednesday and arrested after authorities learned of the plot, Roy police spokeswoman Anna Bond said Thursday.

The students prepared by logging hundreds of hours on flight simulator software on their home computers, and they planned to take a plane at Ogden Hinckley Airport after the bombing, Bond said.

The juvenile hinted at the plan in text messages to a friend, writing that both suspects wanted "revenge on the world" and "we have a plan to get away with it too."

He hinted at the plan by writing "explosives, airport, airplane" and added, "We're just gonna kill and fly our way to a country that won't send us back to the US," according to a probable cause statement police filed to make the arrests late Wednesday.

The Associated Press isn't naming the 16-year-old because he is a minor.

The juvenile told investigators he was so "fascinated" by the 1999 Columbine High School massacre that he visited the Littleton, Colo., school and interviewed the principal about the shootings that killed 13 people. Roy police said the principal, Frank DeAngelis, confirmed that the boy made his visit Dec. 12.

Morgan was being held on $10,000 bail at Weber County jail on suspicion of conspiracy to commit mass destruction. The juvenile was in custody at Weber Valley Detention Center on the same charge. Prosecutors were weighing possible additional charges.

Both students had "absolute knowledge of the security systems and the layout of the school," Bond said. "They knew where the security cameras were. Their original plan was to set off explosives during an assembly. We don't know what date they were planning to do this, but they had been planning it for months."

School officials said there were no imminent plans to hold a school assembly.

Local and federal agents searched the school, two vehicles belonging to the suspects and their homes but found no explosives. The FBI is examining the suspects' computers, police said.

The parents of both students "woke up in the middle of a nightmare," Bond said. "They've been very cooperative."

The other Roy High School student who received text messages tipped authorities to the plot Wednesday, said the school's safety specialist, Nate Taggart.

The student "came forward and had some suspicions but not a lot of information ? enough that it gave administration the ability to make some connections and identify the students involved," Taggart said.

The school has about 1,500 students.

Analysis: More, not less, oil this year despite Iran ban (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The world is likely to have more oil, not less, this summer even as Europe imposes sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Although Europe's refiners will have to pay up for other sources of oil, they should have little difficulty finding them.

Extra crude oil from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Libya will more than make up for any lost from Iran after the ban is imposed on July 1, and this is likely to be reflected in oil prices.

As much as 1 million barrels per day (bpd) more crude oil could be coming from these three producers alone - perhaps double the volume of Iranian exports lost to the European Union.

"The oil market should be very well supplied this summer - even better than now," said Samuel Ciszuk, Middle East and North African (MENA) analyst at consultancy KBC Energy Economics.

"Volumes from Iraq should be up significantly, Libya is doing very well and Saudi Arabia will increase production to compensate for some of the lost Iranian barrels."

The International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday sanctions against Tehran would imply supply declines of about 1.5 million bpd from the world's fifth largest oil producer, adding global oil prices could rise as much as 30 percent if Iran halted oil exports as a result of the West's actions.

But senior oil executives, traders and strategists see little chance of significant supply disruption this summer.

Although oil prices have risen on fears that conflict between Iran and the West could disrupt exports from the Middle East, they argue such a clash is extremely unlikely.

And with the European economy in the doldrums and Asian growth slowing, overall oil demand growth is being constrained.

"NOTHING WILL CHANGE"

Iran will keep selling its oil, much of it into Asia, where consumers will be only too happy to buy at the right price.

"(Iranian) oil will go somewhere else," Total SA Chief Executive Christophe de Margerie told Reuters in Davos on Wednesday. "Iran may give a discount to make it easier and quicker but nothing will change."

The net result is almost certain to be an overall increase in oil supply, initially into Asia but eventually to all world markets, and downward pressure on prices.

Expectations of improving supply are already beginning to affect prices, dampening Brent crude oil futures for nearby contracts relative to forward months, tipping the front of the price curve into a so-called contango.

The front-month contract for Brent, now March, traded around $111 per barrel on Thursday, and this week it has traded at a small discount to April. Many traders expect the rest of the price curve to move into contango as supplies improve.

The world's top oil exporter, Saudi Arabia, is pumping just under 10 million bpd and is most likely to make up any shortfall in Iranian supplies. It has promised to meet any extra requests from customers and Gulf industry sources expect a significant increase this summer, maybe of up to 500,000 bpd.

Iraq is aiming to expand its crude oil exports by up to 400,000 bpd by March, after starting up a new Gulf oil terminal this month. This would take its overall oil sales to about 2.5 million bpd, an Iraqi industry source says.

Libya, returning to full production after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi and civil war last year, has already pushed up oil exports to around 800,000 bpd this month, says the National Oil Corp. Libya expects to increase exports by up to 500,000 bpd by the third quarter.

"FAVOURABLE" PAYMENT TERMS

Meanwhile, many buyers of Iranian oil, especially in Asia, show no sign of supporting the Western campaign against Iran.

Chinese oil companies are negotiating hard with the state-run National Iranian Oil Company on term purchases and, while they want the lowest possible price, they have no intention of taking less Iranian crude, sources familiar with the Chinese term negotiations say.

India wants to take as much Iranian oil as it can because terms are "favorable," Oil Minister S. Jaipal Reddy said on Monday, after talks between the two sides on payment terms.

Together, China and India, could take more Iranian crude, possibly much more, if it were heavily discounted.

"Totting it all up, the figures show supplies from the MENA region improving, not decreasing," said a senior oil trader at a large U.S. bank. "We can't see a shortage coming."

David Wech, head of research at Vienna-based consultancy JBC Energy, said the price impact of the changing supply-demand picture had been obscured by worries over geopolitical risk:

"There is some logic that the situation might lead to ... more barrels if Iran manages to supply more than expected."

The big losers could be European refiners, already under huge pressure from poor margins and high debt. [ID:nL5E8CO097]

"The Iranians might have to discount a bit, but the real victims will be European refiners who will have to pay up for alternative supplies," said a senior trader at a large European refiner that has been a regular buyer of Iranian crude.

"The European refining sector is dying and the EU sanctions are another nail in the coffin."

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

Snowy conditions persist over the Southwest, scattered showers and thunderstorms develop along the Gulf Coast, and snow showers linger over the Great Lakes on Tuesday. A low pressure system that moved over California and into the Great Basin and Four Corners will continue moving southeastward over Colorado and New Mexico. This will allow for snow showers to diminish over the Great Basin and Arizona, while a few lingering snow showers will persist over Colorado and New Mexico. Snowfall accumulation in these areas will range from 3 to 5 inches. Meanwhile, as this system moves into the Southern Plains, it will pull additional moisture and energy onshore from the Gulf of Mexico. This will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop from the US and Mexico border, through Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds, hail, and possibly a tornado or two. Expect rainfall totals to range from 1 to 2 inches, more likely in areas of severe thunderstorm development.

In the Northeast, a low pressure system that brought wintry weather to the Northeast and Great Lakes will advance into eastern Canada. However, the back side of this system will kick up some lake effect snow showers along the downwind shores of the Great Lakes. Snowfall accumulation will range from 2 to 3 inches in most of these areas. Elsewhere, precipitation across the East Coast will wind down as a cold front pushes offshore early Tuesday morning.

In the Northwest, another strong trough of low pressure moves onshore, producing another round of rain and high elevation snow for Washington, Oregon, and northern California. New snowfall totals will range from 4 to 6 inches in the Cascades, with 1 to 3 inches likely in far northern California. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday have ranged from a morning low of -5 degrees at Gunnison, Colo. to a high of 87 degrees at Crystal River, Fla.

Utah man pleads guilty to ex-girlfriend's murder (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? A Utah man was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his ex-girlfriend and hauling her dead body to Missouri inside a 50-gallon storage bin.

Michael Doyel entered the plea Friday and was immediately sentenced by Judge Judith Atherton in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court.

In a parallel case, the 51-year-old Doyel pleaded guilty in December to a federal kidnapping charge. He was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison, and will serve that term before the Utah sentence.

In federal court, Doyel said he strangled Deborah Jones in April 2008 after she ended their relationship.

Jones' body was found inside a bin in the backseat of her car outside a Branson, Mo., motel.
